Annie Leibovitz and the Mexico Filter. When color grading becomes a controversy

Few photographers spark as much conversation as Annie Leibovitz, and her latest project proves the point. A single Instagram post tied to her soccer exhibition has ignited a heated debate — not about composition or lighting technique, but about color grading.

The images come from Futbol 2026, Leibovitz’s show about soccer at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. She photographed players from the three host nations of this year’s World Cup: Mexico, the United States, and Canada. When she shared those three photos online, one of them stood out for all the wrong reasons.

The shot of Mexican players Raul Jimenez, Johan Vasquez, and Julian Quinones — captured mid-game on a dusty field at sunset — carried a warm, golden-yellow tint. The photos of the U.S. and Canadian players leaned toward more neutral tones. Commenters noticed immediately. “She really used the sepia filter for Mexico,” read one of the most-liked replies. Others called it out as an example of racial bias baked into color grading.

So what exactly is the “Mexico filter”? Before digital, photographers picked their film stock, and that choice defined the color palette of the final image. Today, that decision moves into post-production, and stylistic trends emerge from it.

The yellow-tinted look traces back to Steven Soderbergh’s 2000 film Traffic, which used a warm filter to visually separate storylines set in the United States from those set in Mexico. Breaking Bad later leaned on the same technique. Critics argue the tobacco-toned grade unfairly signals “poverty” or “foreignness,” and the shorthand has become notorious enough to earn some blunt nicknames online.

It’s a recurring flashpoint. The White Lotus caught similar criticism during its third season, shot in Thailand with a distinct yellow cast, while the Italy-set second season used cooler, more neutral colors — a contrast some fans found telling.

Leibovitz has her defenders, too. Many pointed out the obvious: the Mexican players were photographed at sunset, when the light is naturally golden anyway. A warm hue at golden hour isn’t a filter so much as physics. Whether that intent reads as documentary honesty or as a loaded aesthetic choice depends heavily on the viewer.

The broader lesson here is worth noting for anyone who edits photos. Color grading is never neutral — every tint carries cultural weight, and in an era where a single Instagram caption can spark a global argument, the difference between “atmospheric” and “offensive” can come down to a few points of saturation.

If you’d like to judge the prints for yourself, the Futbol 2026 exhibition runs at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City until August 30.
