Adaptalux Pod Mini 2.0. A tiny controller for big macro lighting rigs

Lighting a subject the size of a housefly is one of photography’s most fiddly challenges, and Adaptalux has spent over a decade trying to make it less painful. Its latest answer is the Pod Mini 2.0, a compact controller that slots neatly beneath the company’s larger Control Pod at the heart of the Adaptalux Complete Macro Lighting System.

The idea behind the system is modularity. You plug interchangeable lighting arms into a pod, and those arms can be LEDs, Xenon flash, or ultraviolet units depending on what your macro scene demands. Everything talks wirelessly, so brightness and settings for each individual light can be tweaked without touching a single flexible arm — a genuine relief when your rig is inches from a skittish insect.

Where the Control Pod 3.0 offers Bluetooth control across five ports, the Pod Mini 2.0 keeps things deliberately lean with a single port, plus on-device brightness and power controls for quick manual adjustments. It shares the bigger pod’s Bluetooth connectivity and its built-in rechargeable battery, which charges over USB-C. Adaptalux rates it for up to eight hours of battery life per charge, and you can keep shooting while it tops up. It’s compatible with LED and Xenon Flash Lighting Arms, controllable either straight from the device or through Adaptalux’s smartphone app.

The clever pitch here is economics. Rather than buying one Control Pod 3.0 and running two lights from it, you could pick up a pair of Pod Mini 2.0 units and gain far more freedom over where each light physically sits. Two independent controllers mean two independent positions — and in macro work, position is everything.

That flexibility scales further thanks to a refreshed app. Adaptalux has added multi-pod connectivity, letting photographers remotely command a sprawling setup with several pods and, potentially, dozens of individual lights across different types and colors. With full wireless control over the whole array via Bluetooth, building a high-end multi-light macro setup becomes a matter of taps rather than crawling around the tripod.

Speaking of mounting, each pod attaches directly to a camera, tripod, or accessory via a 1/4-20 metal thread, so it drops into most existing rigs without adapters.

The Pod Mini 2.0 is $102.30. Lighting Arms are sold separately, though building out a full macro lighting kit knocks up to 15 percent off the total. As an entry point, a beginner’s pack bundling the Pod Mini 2.0 with a flexible LED Lighting Arm runs $150.25.

Announced on August 17, 2026, the Pod Mini 2.0 is available now. It’s a small piece of hardware, but it lowers the barrier to the kind of controlled, multi-source lighting that separates a snapshot of a beetle from a portfolio-worthy macro image.
