Humanoid robots keep grabbing headlines, but investors have just placed a colossal bet on one that skips legs entirely. Shenzhen’s AI² Robotics secured US$735 million in fresh funding at a US$2.8 billion valuation, with the round backed by a mix of state, corporate, and financial heavyweights. The announcement landed on June 29, 2026, and it signals that the money is chasing machines built to actually get work done rather than perform stage demos.

The star of the show is the AlphaBot 2, and its design philosophy is refreshingly pragmatic. Instead of the notoriously tricky bipedal locomotion that trips up so many humanoid projects, AlphaBot 2 pairs a humanoid torso with a six-wheeled mobile base. That means stability, speed, and none of the balancing acrobatics that drain battery life and computing power. On top of that base sits a genuinely capable manipulator platform, complete with five-fingered hands for dexterous tasks.

Under the hood, AlphaBot 2 offers over 34 degrees of freedom driven by high-precision actuators — enough articulation to handle intricate manipulation rather than just crude pick-and-place moves. One of its cleverest tricks is an adjustable waist-leg lifting mechanism, giving the robot an operational height range that stretches from ground level all the way up to 2,400 mm. In practice, that lets a single unit fetch something off the floor and then reach a high shelf without any human reconfiguration.

Perception is handled by a dense sensor suite. AlphaBot 2 packs multi-camera 360° vision, force sensors for tactile feedback, microphone arrays for voice interaction, and environmental sensors to keep it aware of its surroundings. It’s the kind of stack that separates a robot that can navigate a messy warehouse from one that needs everything laid out just so.

What makes this raise more than hype is that AlphaBot 2 is already earning its keep. AI² Robotics is actively commercializing the platform across several sectors:

  • Industrial environments and factory floors
  • Biotech labs
  • Public services
  • Retail settings

The commercial traction isn’t theoretical either. Back in September 2025, HKC Corporation confirmed an order for more than 1,000 units — the sort of volume commitment that turns a promising prototype into a real product line.

The wheeled approach won’t satisfy purists dreaming of robots that stride through the world like us, but AI² Robotics seems to be betting that customers care about results, not gait. With three-quarters of a billion dollars now in the bank and enterprise contracts already inked, AlphaBot 2 is one of the more grounded stories in a field prone to lofty promises.
