Laguna Beach Proposal Shoot. A Videographer's Camera Caught a Racist Rant

Every wedding and proposal photographer knows the drill: scout the spot, set up early, and hope nobody walks into the frame. On Friday, October 2, 2026, videographer Trinity Lugo of Trinity Films got something much worse than a photobomber at Crescent Bay Point Park in Laguna Beach, California, and her camera recorded all of it.

Lugo was there to film a surprise. Emmanuel Banuelos was about to propose to her sister, Hayley Lugo, and had arranged flowers and a mariachi band for the moment. He told ABC7 Los Angeles that the band was there because his girlfriend “loves mariachi.”

While the crew was setting up before the couple arrived, a woman walking her dog came over to complain about the setup. According to the videographer’s account reported by Yahoo News, she started by asking about permits and saying that “the park is for people who live here to enjoy the park and have picnics.” She said she had called the police. Once the mariachi band started playing, she escalated and told the group to “go back to Mexico.”

The proposal went ahead anyway. Lugo kept filming and did not respond to the woman.

“I could not believe that I was being told those words. At first I thought, you know, she was just a normal Karen,” Lugo told ABC7. She explained why she held back: “It was a really special moment. That’s part of the reason that I really didn’t want to escalate the situation further.”

The bride-to-be took it harder. “It hurts a lot because it’s not just us there. She’s being mean to the whole Mexican culture, the whole Hispanic culture, like everyone’s felt it,” Hayley Lugo said.

The clip spread quickly online, and PetaPixel reported that internet users have since identified the woman. Gismoland is not naming her.

The permit question

The case touches on a real issue for photographers. Can anyone tell a crew to leave a public park? The City of Laguna Beach said it rejects “the hateful language and behavior shown in the video.” It added that its parks and beaches are open to everyone and regularly host milestone celebrations. The city also noted that professional photography has its own rules and permit requirements.

Hoodline reported that the city’s permits cost $100 to $680 depending on the type. It also reported that the city does not offer permits for proposal setups. That leaves people who stage a proposal in an unclear position, even though the proposal itself is not prohibited.

For working photographers, the practical advice holds: check local permit rules before booking a shoot in a scenic public spot, and keep recording if someone confronts you. Here, the footage became the story.
