Nova Movie. Marvel eyes a return to cosmic Guardians territory

Marvel is quietly kicking the tires on a Nova movie, and if it happens, it could be the studio’s best shot at recapturing the freewheeling, off-Earth energy that made the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy such a fan favorite.

According to a Deadline report published this week, Michael Waldron is attached to write the project — and may direct it, too, if it moves forward. Waldron is no stranger to the MCU machine: he created Loki, wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and co-wrote Avengers: Doomsday. That’s a track record with a wide range of outcomes, which feels appropriate for a project insiders describe as still in early development.

Nothing is locked here. This isn’t even the first time Marvel has flirted with the character — a previously planned Disney Plus series based on Nova was put on ice. So temper expectations accordingly (Mahershala Ali’s still-unreleased Blade is a cautionary tale about how long these things can sit in limbo).

Who is Nova, anyway? The mantle traditionally belongs to Richard Rider, a member of the Nova Corps — the intergalactic police force already glimpsed in the Guardians films, where their ranks included performances from Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, and Peter Serafinowicz. In the comics, Rider is the lone surviving centurion after Annihilus devastates the Corps during Annihilation, the sprawling Marvel event that helped set the table for the modern Guardians runs.

That comics DNA is exactly why a Nova film is so tantalizing. It could function like a Guardians movie in disguise — Rider leading a squad of Nova Corps members, or even folding into Rocket’s rebuilt Guardians team (as teased at the end of Vol. 3) to become a stealth Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4. Either way, the appeal is the same: a standalone cosmic adventure with no Avengers baggage and, crucially, no multiverse spaghetti to untangle.

There’s also a wildcard. Rider isn’t the only hero to wear the Nova helmet — teenage Sam Alexander is a Nova Corps member too. If Waldron leans younger, the film could plug into the long-teased Young Avengers or Champions pipeline, connecting Nova to the likes of Kamala Khan and the growing roster of youthful heroes seeded across recent Marvel projects.

For now, treat Nova as a promising maybe rather than a done deal. What is confirmed on the calendar: two Marvel movies land this year — Spider-Man: Brand New Day this month and Avengers: Doomsday in December. The cosmic corner of the MCU may have to wait a little longer for its next big trip beyond Earth.
