The Long Walk. Stephen King's cursed adaptation finally sprints to streaming
SHARE

For nearly four decades, The Long Walk was Hollywood’s white whale — a Stephen King story so stubbornly resistant to adaptation that it earned a reputation as flat-out unfilmable. The rights bounced through the hands of George Romero, Frank Darabont, James Vanderbilt and André Øvredal over almost 40 years, and not one of them managed to get the project off the ground. So when Francis Lawrence’s version turned out to be genuinely good, that was arguably the bigger shock than the film existing at all.

Now it’s found a second life. The Long Walk landed at #1 on HBO Max’s charts within a single day of arriving on the service, after its theatrical run last year.

The premise is brutal in its simplicity. In an alternate United States ruled by a military dictatorship after a civil war, 50 teenage boys — one from every state — volunteer for an annual endurance ritual. They march on foot across a desolate American Midwest, and anyone who slows or stops, for any reason, is shot dead on the spot. The last one standing walks away with a fortune and their fondest wish granted.

King wrote it around 1966 as a University of Maine freshman, but it didn’t see print until 1985 under his Richard Bachman pseudonym, later collected in The Bachman Books. The Bachman era has aged strangely well: The Running Man nailed reality-TV satire a decade and a half before reality TV existed, and The Long Walk now reads like a lost ancestor of the young-adult dystopia, the connective tissue between Battle Royale and The Hunger Games.

King has never spelled out any intended metaphor, though critics have long read the story as a Vietnam parallel — a war waged by the old on the young. That elasticity is exactly why it still lands. Swap in climate change, endless military misadventure or capitalism itself, and the framework holds.

What keeps the film watchable is its pace. Lawrence resists the temptation to let it collapse into a string of roadside conversations. Every time Garraty (Cooper Hoffman) and McVries (David Jonsson) start to enjoy themselves, another walker dies for some grimly stupid reason — wearing the wrong shoes, for instance. We come to like most of these characters, which makes the fact that nearly all of them must die impossible to look away from.

As he did with The Mist, Lawrence tweaks some of King’s finer details. Without spoiling anything, the movie ends differently from the book; some changes were necessary, others have proven divisive. Either way, this is a fresh interpretation rather than a straight transcription — reason enough for even die-hard readers to give it a watch.

The Long Walk is streaming now on HBO Max.
