ChatGPT on WhatsApp. Back in Europe after Brussels flexed its muscles

ChatGPT on WhatsApp. Back in Europe after Brussels flexed its muscles

Europeans can once again summon ChatGPT straight from their WhatsApp chats — and this time, no one is charging Meta’s rivals for the privilege. As of July 13, 2026, OpenAI’s assistant is live again across the European Economic Area, accessible through the verified contact 1-800-CHATGPT at the number +1-800-242-8478.

The return is less a product launch than a regulatory arm-wrestle finally settled. Meta banned third-party AI chatbots from WhatsApp last November. In March it relented — but only for those willing to pay. The European Commission took a dim view of that, and last month ordered Meta to open the door to third-party AI assistants in the EEA for free. ChatGPT walking back in is the first visible consequence.

What you actually get is a fully functional chatbot without the overhead. There’s no account sign-up required and no separate app to install — you simply message the number as you would any contact. Under the hood, text conversations run on OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 model, while image generation is handled by gpt-image-2.

The feature set is generous for something living inside a messaging thread:

  • Text conversations with ChatGPT in many languages
  • Uploading images for the model to analyze
  • Sending voice notes
  • Creating images on demand

Linking an existing ChatGPT account remains entirely optional — do it and you unlock higher usage limits, skip it and you still get the core experience. It’s a sensible split: casual users can dip in without friction, while heavier users have a reason to connect their accounts.

The interesting wrinkle here is durability. Free access isn’t a permanent gift from Meta’s goodwill — it’s a condition tied to the European Commission’s ongoing antitrust investigation. For now, the requirement to keep third-party assistants free stands until that probe concludes. In other words, ChatGPT’s seat in WhatsApp is guaranteed only as long as Brussels keeps its hand on the table.

For everyday users the practical upshot is straightforward. WhatsApp is the default messaging app for hundreds of millions of Europeans, and folding a capable AI assistant into it removes nearly every barrier to entry. No download, no login screen, no subscription prompt — just a contact you can text a question, forward a photo, or send a voice note. That’s a meaningfully lower bar than opening a dedicated app or a browser tab.

It also underscores how much of the current AI landscape is being shaped in regulatory offices rather than product roadmaps. OpenAI built the model; the European Commission, arguably, built the distribution channel. Whether this arrangement outlives the investigation is anyone’s guess — but for the moment, chatting with GPT-5.5 in Europe is as simple as saving a number.
