SK Hynix RAM Warning. The AI Alibi Behind the Price Surge Starts to Crack
SHARE

If you’ve been putting off that memory upgrade in the hope prices would settle down, brace yourself: SK Hynix is now warning that 2027 could be the worst year yet for RAM pricing. That’s a grim forecast from one of the three companies that between them control almost the entire global memory supply.

For months, the narrative from the big three memory makers — Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron — has been consistent and convenient. The so-called RAMpocalypse, they told us, is simply an unavoidable byproduct of the AI boom. Every fab line that can be repurposed to churn out high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators is being repurposed, the story goes, leaving conventional DRAM in short supply and driving prices skyward. It’s a tidy explanation, and it lets everyone shrug and blame the machines.

The trouble is that this explanation is now facing a serious challenge. A damning report has surfaced that threatens to add real fuel to an existing price-fixing lawsuit targeting the three manufacturers. In other words, the industry’s main alibi — we can’t help it, it’s the AI revolution — may not hold up as neatly as the memory giants would like.

Why does this matter to anyone shopping for a PC, a laptop or a fresh set of DDR5 sticks? Because these three firms don’t just influence the memory market — they effectively are the memory market. When all three move in the same direction on pricing, buyers have nowhere else to turn. That concentration is exactly what makes the price-fixing allegations so combustible, and exactly why a report undercutting the AI-shortage story is such a big deal.

There’s a real tension in SK Hynix’s own messaging here. On one hand, the company is publicly forecasting that memory will get more expensive rather than cheaper, with 2027 flagged as a low point for consumers. On the other, that very confidence about rising prices sits awkwardly next to a legal case arguing that these increases weren’t purely a matter of supply and demand.

A few takeaways for anyone tracking the situation:

  • Prices aren’t expected to ease soon — SK Hynix itself is pointing to 2027 as a particularly bad year.
  • The AI-shortage explanation is under scrutiny, thanks to a new report tied to the price-fixing lawsuit.
  • Market concentration is the real story — three companies, one direction of travel, and very little competitive pressure to keep prices honest.

None of this changes what your next RAM kit costs today. But it does reframe the conversation. The next time a memory maker tells you high prices are simply the cost of the AI era, it’s worth remembering that the courts may soon be asking whether that’s the whole truth — or a very useful cover story.
