YouTube PiP Glitch. Floating player vanishes on iPhone and Android

Picture-in-picture is one of those features you never think about until it stops working. And right now, for a lot of YouTube viewers, it has stopped working entirely.

The bug is straightforward and annoying in equal measure: swipe out of the YouTube app while a video is playing, and instead of the familiar floating player tucking itself into the corner of your screen, you get nothing. The video’s visuals disappear, and only the audio keeps chugging along in the background — effectively demoting your carefully queued clip to a podcast.

YouTube has acknowledged the problem, describing it as the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature failing to trigger when exiting the app. According to the company, the vast majority of these reports are coming from iOS users, though a handful of Android owners have run into it too. That skew tracks with real-world testing: the glitch reproduces on an iPhone running version 21.28 of the YouTube app, but not on a Pixel.

Timeline-wise, YouTube first flagged the issue on Friday morning Pacific time, saying its teams are actively investigating. As of Saturday afternoon, there was still no fix and no meaningful progress to report — just a request for patience while engineers dig into it. If you want to keep tabs on the situation, the YouTube Help thread is the place to watch for updates.

The timing stings a little because PiP has only recently become a mainstream perk. Earlier this year, YouTube began rolling out picture-in-picture to free users worldwide, opening up a convenience that was previously gated behind a Premium subscription in many regions. Having built that expectation, a widespread failure to launch the floating player feels like a step backward.

For now, there’s no official workaround beyond waiting. If you rely on PiP for multitasking — glancing at a recipe while cooking, keeping a highlight reel going while you scroll elsewhere — the audio-only fallback is at least better than a hard stop, but it’s cold comfort for a feature that’s supposed to keep the picture in the picture.

It’s a reminder that even the simplest-sounding features sit on a tangle of platform-specific plumbing. That the bug hits iOS far harder than Android suggests something in Apple’s implementation of the app is misfiring, rather than a server-side change affecting everyone equally. Until YouTube ships a patch, iPhone owners are the ones drawing the short straw.
