WhatsApp iPad Update. Cut the cord and message freely on your tablet

For years, WhatsApp treated your phone as the mothership and everything else — desktop, web, tablet — as a mere satellite. That relationship just changed. As of July 22, 2026, WhatsApp is rolling out a batch of four new features, and the headline act is aimed squarely at iPad owners: you can now create a WhatsApp account directly on the tablet, no phone required.

Until now, the iPad app — which only debuted last year — was strictly a companion. You had to own a phone, register there first, then link the tablet as a secondary device. That dependency is gone. You can register, set up your account and start chatting entirely from the iPad itself. For anyone who leans on a tablet as their main portable screen, or who simply doesn’t want their messaging tethered to a handset, it’s a genuinely meaningful shift in how the app can be used.

The change also nudges WhatsApp closer to being a true standalone messaging platform across Apple’s ecosystem, rather than a phone accessory that happens to run elsewhere. It’s the kind of quality-of-life fix that sounds small on paper but reshapes daily habits.

The update doesn’t stop at the tablet. WhatsApp is also improving the in-car experience through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Behind the wheel, the app can now read incoming messages aloud, let you dictate replies, place calls and browse your call history — all designed to keep your eyes on the road instead of your screen. It’s a sensible extension for a messaging service that so many people already treat as their default line of communication.

Rounding out the release are two further features that arrive alongside the iPad and car improvements, bringing the total to four new additions in this wave.

As you’d expect from WhatsApp, the rollout is gradual. The features are going out globally, but they’ll reach eligible users over the coming weeks rather than landing everywhere at once. If your iPad or car display hasn’t offered the new options yet, patience — and a look at your update queue — should sort it out.

  • Standalone iPad accounts — register and use WhatsApp on an iPad with no linked phone
  • CarPlay and Android Auto support — hear messages, reply by voice, make calls and view call history
  • Two additional features shipping in the same update
  • Availability — rolling out globally to eligible users over the coming weeks

None of this costs anything, of course — WhatsApp remains free — and the iPad independence in particular closes one of the more frustrating gaps in the app’s multi-device story. For tablet-first users, it’s arguably the most useful thing WhatsApp has done since the iPad app launched.
