Square Enix pulled the wraps off a brand-new tank job for Final Fantasy XIV at Berlin Fan Fest 2026, and it’s a beefy one. Say hello to the Bastion, a main tank built to soak up punishment, keep the party breathing, and still find the time to throw its weight around offensively.
What makes the Bastion stand out visually is its weapon of choice: a pair of greatshields called skyltborg. Rather than the usual sword-and-board setup, this job leans into dual shields as both armor and armament — a defensive stance that doubles as a blunt-force answer to anything foolish enough to hold aggro nearby.
On paper, the Bastion is being pitched as a hybrid. Square Enix describes it as a defense- and offense-oriented main tank, meaning it’s designed to hold the front line without sacrificing damage output. The twist is its emphasis on party sustain: alongside dealing damage and drawing enemy attention, the Bastion can help keep the group healthy, blurring the line between tank and support in a way that should make raid compositions a little more interesting.

The Bastion arrives as part of Evercold, the expansion Square Enix has scheduled to launch in January 2027. That gives tank mains plenty of runway to theorycraft rotations and argue about whether two shields really are better than one before they get to swing them in anger.
Berlin Fan Fest 2026 has been the stage for the reveal, and the Bastion joins FFXIV’s growing roster of tank jobs as its most defensively distinctive addition yet. Whether it becomes the go-to main tank or a niche pick will come down to how its offense-and-sustain balance shakes out in practice — but on presentation alone, a greatshield-wielding bruiser that mends the party while cracking skulls is a hard concept to resist.
