The Supplement Hustle Selling You a Natural Fix for ADHD

Scroll through Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube long enough and you’ll eventually meet the anti-Adderall economy. A wave of supplement brands — Graymatter Labs, Stasis, Magic Mind, Thesis, and Nello among them — are pouring money into paid influencer partnerships that frame prescription stimulants as jittery, addictive, or simply unnecessary. The pitch? Swap your Schedule II medication for a jar of pills or a drink mix built from L-theanine, ashwagandha, turmeric, and B vitamins.

The timing is not subtle. As HHS under Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pushes a narrative about the “overmedicalization” of Americans — and pharmacies continue to grapple with stimulant shortages that started back in 2022 — these nootropic brands have found a receptive, anxious audience.

The economics are worth pausing on. Thesis sells formulas with names like “Motivation” and “Neuroprotection” for $59 a jar. Stasis pushes pill subscription bundles running up to $79 per month. Graymatter Labs markets a “Bright Mind” drink mix packed with 27 plant-based nootropics and adaptogens. Magic Mind, meanwhile, recruited comedian Pete Holmes and Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford to help sell the story.

Here’s the crucial technical detail: none of this has to clear the FDA. Unlike prescription and over-the-counter drugs, dietary supplements don’t need to prove safety or efficacy before hitting the market. That regulatory gap is being repackaged as a feature — “natural” reads as “safer,” even when it simply means “untested.”

The influencer scripts follow a formula. Content creator Katie Silbar, endorsing Thesis, described weaning off Adderall and feeling “way less jittery” and “focused” in a way that “isn’t forced.” Stasis leans on the dreaded 3:47 PM crash, positioning its capsules as the fix — though it stops short of telling users to quit their meds outright.

Clinicians aren’t buying it. Kristen Leinung, a mental health nurse practitioner in Portland, notes that stimulant medications have existed for nearly a century and have been approved for children since the 1960s, with well-documented efficacy and predictable side effects. Her worry is straightforward: pessimistic framing may nudge people to abandon medication that works.

  • Untreated or under-treated ADHD is linked to higher mortality risk and roughly double the odds of premature death
  • The condition correlates with worse sleep, less exercise, riskier driving, and higher smoking rates
  • Some ingredients — omega-3s, L-theanine with caffeine, certain adaptogens — do carry modest research as general cognitive support

ADHD coach Cindy Goldrich calls the marketing “exploitative,” arguing it targets people in crisis who can’t fill prescriptions through no fault of their own. Meta and TikTok declined to comment on record, though a TikTok spokesperson said several brand accounts were removed under health-misinformation rules; YouTube said the same accounts didn’t violate its guidelines. The supplement companies didn’t respond at all.

The takeaway is old-fashioned: a wellness video is not a treatment plan. As Leinung puts it, anyone thinking about stopping their stimulants should have a thorough conversation with a health care provider first.
