Sam Altman's AI CEO U-Turn. From boardroom fantasy to backpedal in eight months
SHARE

Eight months is a long time in artificial intelligence — long enough, apparently, for Sam Altman to completely reverse his position on whether a machine should run a company.

Back in November 2025, the OpenAI chief executive floated an idea that sounded like equal parts provocation and prophecy: OpenAI ought to be the first major company run by an AI boss. He didn’t just suggest it — he framed failure as a personal disgrace. “Shame on me if OpenAI is not the first big company run by an [AI],” he said at the time, positioning himself as someone eager to be automated out of his own corner office.

Fast-forward to July 2026, and the tune has changed dramatically. Altman now says nobody actually wants an AI boss at all — including, it seems, the people who would have to work for one.

The shift is more than a soundbite. It reflects a growing recognition, even inside the labs building these systems, that leadership isn’t just a matter of processing information and issuing directives. Altman has pointed to the parts of his own job that today’s models simply cannot replicate: the daily back-and-forth with employees, the conversations with users, the human texture of running an organisation. Those are the messy, relational tasks that don’t reduce neatly to prompts and outputs.

It’s a telling admission from one of the industry’s loudest optimists. For years, the pitch around large language models has leaned on the idea that AI could eventually shoulder ever more consequential decisions. An AI CEO was the logical — if theatrical — endpoint of that argument. Altman’s earlier comment was, arguably, a bet on how quickly capability would catch up to ambition.

What changed? Not the technology overnight, but perhaps the appetite for it. There’s a difference between an AI that drafts your emails and an AI that decides who gets fired, which markets to enter, or how to weather a crisis. The first is a productivity tool. The second requires trust — and trust, it turns out, is something people extend to humans far more readily than to a model, no matter how fluent.

  • November 2025: Altman says it would be an embarrassment if OpenAI isn’t the first big company run by an AI.
  • July 2026: Altman says nobody wants an AI boss, and acknowledges tasks only humans can do.

For anyone watching the AI hype cycle, the episode is a useful reality check. The people closest to the technology are quietly redrawing the line between what AI can do and what we actually want it to do. And for now, at least, the corner office stays human.
