KEH Camera. Inside the warehouse where used gear gets a second life

Behind the anonymous walls of a warehouse in Atlanta, Georgia, sits one of the largest used-camera operations on the planet. KEH — long a fixture in the second-hand photography world — recently opened its doors for a rare behind-the-scenes look, and the picture that emerges is less “dusty resale shop” and more “logistics machine wrapped around a world-class repair bench.”

The setting is worth a mention: Atlanta in high summer is famously brutal, all humidity and heat shimmer. Which makes KEH’s air-conditioned warehouse and retail front feel like a genuine sanctuary — and a fitting one, given how much delicate glass and electronics pass through the building.

What makes KEH different from the average marketplace listing is the sheer scale and the human expertise behind it. This isn’t a peer-to-peer gamble where you hope the seller’s “mint condition” matches reality. Every piece of gear that comes through is inspected, graded and — where needed — repaired by an in-house team.

That repair center is arguably the star of the show. In an era where plenty of manufacturers would rather you buy new than fix old, having a facility staffed with technicians who actually know how to service cameras and lenses is increasingly rare. It’s the difference between a body destined for landfill and one that gets years of additional use.

A few things stand out about the operation:

  • Volume — the inventory runs into countless cameras, lenses and accessories, spanning brands and eras.
  • Grading — gear is evaluated by trained staff rather than left to a seller’s optimistic self-assessment.
  • Repair capability — an on-site service center keeps used equipment functional and worth buying.
  • Retail presence — beyond the warehouse, there’s a storefront for those who want to handle gear before committing.

There’s a broader story here too. The used-camera market has quietly become one of the smartest ways to buy into serious photography. New flagship bodies command eye-watering prices, but a well-graded, properly inspected used body can deliver the same results for a fraction of the cost. Add a functioning repair pipeline and you get something the fast-fashion side of tech rarely offers: longevity.

For photographers, the appeal is obvious. Whether you’re chasing a specific vintage lens, hunting a bargain on a previous-generation body, or simply trying to keep an aging kit alive, an operation that combines deep inventory with genuine repair know-how is a rare asset.

The tour ultimately reveals a company built around the idea that camera gear shouldn’t be disposable — that a used body is only as good as the people who inspect and service it. In a market obsessed with the newest sensor and the latest autofocus wizardry, there’s something refreshing about a warehouse quietly betting on the long life of the gear we already have.
