The Grand Tour Returns. The Original Trio Drops In on Their Replacements

Fans who thought they’d waved a permanent goodbye to the world’s most reckless car show have reason to perk up. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May — the original trio behind The Grand Tour — are set to make cameo appearances in the returning series, sharing the screen with the new hosts who’ve stepped into their (well-worn, tyre-scuffed) shoes.

The move is a savvy piece of continuity. Handing a beloved format to a fresh lineup is a gamble at the best of times, and letting the old guard slip back in for a scene or two is exactly the kind of reassuring wink that keeps loyal viewers on board. Rather than a clean break, the new season positions itself as a passing of the baton — with the previous holders still hanging around long enough to make sure nobody drops it.

For those who followed the show through its many far-flung expeditions, the appeal is obvious. Clarkson, Hammond, and May built a chemistry over decades of bickering, botched challenges, and questionable engineering decisions. That dynamic doesn’t transfer automatically to a new crew, so seeing the originals rub shoulders with their successors gives the reboot an implicit stamp of approval — and a bridge between eras.

It’s also a clever bit of expectation management. Cameos let the show acknowledge its own history head-on instead of pretending the new season sprang from nowhere. Viewers get to see the torch handed over on screen, which tends to land far better than a silent recast.

What form these appearances take remains to be seen. A cameo can be anything from a fleeting on-camera exchange to a full guest segment, and the trio have never been shy about milking a moment for maximum comedic effect. Whether they show up to offer sage advice, heckle from the sidelines, or simply crash a challenge for old times’ sake, their presence is bound to be a talking point among fans.

The returning series marks a genuine turning point for one of streaming’s most recognisable motoring franchises. After years of building the format around three specific personalities, the challenge now is to prove the format can outlive them — and the smartest way to do that, it seems, is to bring them along for the ride, at least briefly.

For long-time viewers, the takeaway is simple: the show they loved isn’t being erased so much as evolved. The originals aren’t gone entirely, and the new hosts aren’t being thrown into the deep end alone. It’s a reboot with a familiar co-pilot in the passenger seat — and that alone should be enough to get petrolheads tuning back in.
