Kindred Companion Sciences Beagles. Puppies engineered to skip the sneezes

Cuddling a dog without reaching for the antihistamines has been a fantasy for millions of allergy sufferers. Two young beagles named Bailey and Alfie now make it real — not through grooming tricks or dubious “hypoallergenic” breed marketing, but through a targeted edit to their DNA.

The pups are the debut project of Kindred Companion Sciences, a biotech startup founded in 2020 by scientist Matt Walker, who emerged from stealth this week alongside his engineered dogs. Walker’s motivation was personal: a lifelong dog lover, his own allergies had always kept a pet out of reach. Having worked with Crispr gene editing at Harvard and Columbia, he set out to attack the problem at its biological source.

That source is a protein called Can f 1, found in canine dander, hair and saliva. It’s the single most common dog allergen, triggering reactions in more than half of people with dog allergies. Crucially, breeds sold as “hypoallergenic” often carry equal or higher levels of it — a marketing myth the team wanted to bypass entirely.

Here’s how they did it:

  • Crispr was used to knock out the Can f 1 gene in skin cells from a female beagle.
  • The edited cells were injected into donor beagle eggs via somatic cell nuclear transfer — the cloning method behind Dolly the sheep.
  • Of 25 embryos carrying the edit, two developed to term in a surrogate, producing Bailey and Alfie.

The results, published Wednesday in The Crispr Journal, are striking. Both puppies had normal birth weights and no congenital abnormalities. DNA sequencing confirmed the edit, and lab analysis of their saliva and dander showed no detectable Can f 1 — while control samples from a beagle, a poodle and a golden doodle all lit up with the allergen.

Walker then made himself the test subject. A skin-prick test with drops from an edited dog produced no reaction, while drops from a non-edited dog did. The real proof, though, is domestic: Walker has lived with Bailey for the past year and a half without a single sniffle. Alfie lives with cofounder Nick Gavin.

This isn’t the first crack at allergen-free pets. Researchers previously edited the main cat allergen, Fel d 1, in cells, and a South Korean group produced a gene-edited cat named Alsik with “extremely low” allergen levels in 2024. Fyodor Urnov, a gene editing expert at UC Berkeley, backs the approach: “Editing can, and should, be applied to solving legitimate problems that humanity has.”

The team checked for off-target edits and found none, and both dogs will receive lifelong veterinary monitoring. Kindred started with beagles for their research pedigree but plans to expand to other breeds, including allergy-free service dogs, by creating “founder animals” whose edit passes naturally to their offspring. Don’t expect one at the breeder just yet, though — Walker gave no timeline for commercial availability, and long-term health monitoring comes first.
