Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo. Better late than never for hesitant hunters

Capcom has done something slightly unusual: it dropped a demo for a game that has been out for well over a year. As of today, the Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo is available on both console and PC, giving newcomers a proper taste of the hunt without spending a cent. The timing isn’t random — it arrives ahead of the upcoming Ascendance expansion, and Capcom clearly wants fence-sitters climbing aboard before that content lands.

The full game originally launched on February 28, 2025, so plenty of players have already sunk hundreds of hours into stalking beasts across the Forbidden Lands. This demo is aimed squarely at everyone else — the folks who watched from the sidelines and never quite committed. And it’s a generous slice, all things considered.

Here’s what you get to play with:

  • Full character creation, so you can craft your hunter (and your Palico companion) exactly the way you’d want them in the real thing.
  • The opening story stretch, letting you play through Chapter 1–3’s “To the Forest” mission.
  • Access to all 14 weapon types — the entire arsenal, from the Great Sword to the Insect Glaive, is unlocked for you to experiment with.
  • Best of all, your save data carries over to the full game, so nothing you do in the demo goes to waste if you decide to buy in.

That last point is the real hook. Trying before you buy is one thing; trying before you buy and keeping your progress is a far more tempting proposition. Grind through the demo, nail down your loadout preferences, then pick up right where you left off in the standard edition.

There is, however, a significant catch — and it’s a familiar one for Monster Hunter demos. The demo build is solo-only, meaning all online features are stripped out. Monster Hunter has always been a series that shines brightest with friends piling onto the same colossal beast, coordinating traps and dodging tail swipes together. Playing entirely alone strips away a big chunk of what makes these hunts memorable, so treat the demo as a mechanics-and-vibes preview rather than the complete social experience.

Still, for the price of nothing, it’s an easy recommendation. You can size up the combat, decide whether the movement and monster design click for you, and get comfortable with a weapon or two before the Ascendance expansion changes the landscape. If you like what you find, the standard version of Monster Hunter Wilds runs $39.99.

A demo a year and a half after launch is an odd sight, but with a major expansion on the horizon, the logic is sound: give lapsed and would-be hunters a low-stakes reason to grab a weapon. The solo-only limitation stings, yet the carry-over saves and full weapon roster make this one of the more substantial free trials around.
