The Odyssey. Why Christopher Nolan handed Tom Holland the role of Telemachus

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey already has one of the most enviable casts in recent memory, mixing longtime collaborators with fresh blood. Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway anchor the ensemble as Odysseus and Penelope, but the choice that raised the most eyebrows was for their son, Telemachus. Nolan handed the role to Tom Holland — and now he’s finally explained why.

The reasoning surfaces in Filming the Odyssey: Inside the Making of Christopher Nolan’s Modern Epic, a lavish behind-the-scenes book from Insight Editions arriving on August 25. Polygon ran an exclusive preview from the section dedicated to casting, and Nolan’s comments make the logic behind picking a Spider-Man for an ancient Greek prince surprisingly clear.

The pitch, in Nolan’s words, is about range across a single character’s arc. “He was able to tap into that boyish enthusiasm in the early parts, that idealism about who his father is, what’s going on, and then really chart that passage into maturity and adulthood and a little bit of the darkness that comes with that jaded quality,” the director says. “I mean, he’s in such a good place in his life and career to take on this part at this time.”

There’s a small wrinkle worth noting: Holland is 30, playing a 20-year-old Telemachus — a character the actor himself reportedly assumed was closer to 16. Nolan clearly wasn’t fussed about the math, betting instead on Holland’s ability to sell the transformation from wide-eyed kid to hardened young man.

The second reason is more physical, and it circles right back to those web-slinging blockbusters. Nolan praises Holland’s “incredible ability to absorb choreography, to modify fight moves in the moment, to take direction.” In other words, the actor can throw down when the scene calls for it. The irony is delicious: Nolan reworked Homer’s text so that Telemachus largely sits out the climactic massacre in Ithaca when Odysseus finally comes home. All that fight-scene pedigree, and the prince barely swings a sword.

Holland, for his part, frames the role in more emotional terms. “For me, as Telemachus, it’s a coming-of-age story,” he says in the same section. “It’s about a young kid from boy to man. It’s about this insatiable need to find his father and ultimately succeeding. It’s about protecting his mother. It’s about growing up and coming to realize who he is in this crazy world.”

The book, assembled with casting director John Papsidera’s process front and center, also digs into how Damon, Hathaway and Robert Pattinson landed their parts. For anyone tracking Nolan’s take on the classic epic, it’s shaping up to be the richest paper trail we’re likely to get before the film itself lands. Filming the Odyssey hits shelves August 25.
