Just over a year ago, Qualcomm dangled a tantalising promise in front of anyone who cares about how their music sounds: a new generation of wireless headphones capable of scalable, lossless 24-bit/192kHz audio. The kind of quality that would finally close the gap between Bluetooth cans and a wired hi-fi rig. So where is it?
The short answer, after asking around the industry, is that it’s still some way off — and not because the technology can’t do it. It’s because most of the big headphone brands aren’t convinced you actually want it. At least, not yet.
That’s a striking admission. On paper, fully scalable lossless streaming at 24-bit/192kHz is the milestone wireless audio has been chasing for years. It means transmitting studio-grade files over Bluetooth without the compression that has long forced listeners to accept ‘good enough’ rather than ‘the same as the source’. It’s the difference between hearing a squashed approximation of a recording and hearing what the engineers actually mixed.
And yet, outside the rarefied high-end — where audiophiles will happily pay a premium and scrutinise every hertz — the enthusiasm just isn’t there. When we put the question to the major brands, the responses were noticeably muted. The recurring theme: the mainstream customer, the person buying a pair of noise-cancelling earbuds for the commute, can’t reliably tell the difference and isn’t asking for it.
There’s a hard-nosed logic to that. Consider what actually limits perceived quality for most people:
- The source material — plenty of streaming libraries still lean on compressed catalogues, so a lossless pipeline has nothing pristine to carry.
- The listening environment — a noisy train or busy street flattens subtle detail long before the codec does.
- The transducers themselves — a tiny earbud driver can only resolve so much, no matter how clean the signal reaching it.
From a manufacturer’s perspective, chasing 24-bit/192kHz across an entire product range adds cost and engineering complexity for a payoff that only a slice of buyers will ever hear. Battery drain, chipset support and the reliability of the wireless link all have to be balanced, and none of that is trivial.
The result is a familiar pattern in consumer tech: the capability exists, the demand is uncertain, and the industry moves at the pace of the market rather than the pace of the spec sheet. Lossless hi-res over Bluetooth will almost certainly arrive as a mainstream feature — the direction of travel is clear — but the brands are in no hurry to lead the charge when most listeners haven’t noticed anything is missing.
For now, the true wireless lossless dream remains a promise for the patient. If you’re the type who can pick out the difference, the high-end is where you’ll find it. For everyone else, the giants are content to keep waiting until the crowd starts asking.
