Some designs are too good to leave in the past. Philips clearly agrees, because The Roller (MS60) is a knowing nod to the company’s 1980s Moving Sound boomboxes — those shoulder-mounted, cassette-slinging monsters that once ruled the sidewalk. Only this time, the internals have been dragged firmly into 2026.

The retro silhouette is unmistakable, all rounded corners and unapologetic bulk, measuring 38 x 20 x 12 centimeters. But instead of ferrite tape heads, you get a 60W output, a wireless stack built around Bluetooth 6.0, and support for Auracast — meaning you can broadcast to multiple compatible speakers at once, or hop into a shared audio stream at a party.

Philips hasn’t leaned entirely on nostalgia for the feature set either. There’s USB playback for anyone who still keeps a stash of tracks on a thumb drive, plus app control for tuning the sound and managing connections from your phone. It’s the kind of modern convenience layer the original Moving Sound range could never have dreamed of.

Battery life is where the reboot really flexes. The Roller is rated for a hefty 24 hours of playback, so it should comfortably outlast a full day at the beach, a backyard cookout, or an ambitious road trip. Speaking of the beach: an IP67 rating means the speaker shrugs off dust and can survive a dunk in water, making it far more resilient than the fragile, tape-eating boxes it pays tribute to.

The design philosophy here is refreshingly honest. Rather than pretending to be a sleek, minimalist cylinder like most portable speakers, The Roller embraces its chunky heritage. It wants to be seen, carried and shown off — the audio equivalent of pulling on a vintage windbreaker.

A quick rundown of the essentials:

  • Power: 60W output
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 6.0, USB playback, Auracast, app control
  • Battery: up to 24-hour playback
  • Durability: IP67 water and dust resistance
  • Dimensions: 38 x 20 x 12 cm

Philips put The Roller on sale in Q2 2026, and it’s available now. Pricing lands at US$229 in the United States, £169 in the UK, and €180 across Europe — squarely in mid-range portable speaker territory, but with a design hook few rivals can match.

It’s an unusual play: a speaker that sells itself as much on memory as on measured performance. Yet with a genuinely modern spec sheet underneath the throwback exterior, The Roller feels less like a gimmick and more like a well-judged remaster of a classic. If you grew up with a boombox on your shoulder — or just wish you had — this one is calling.
