Valerion ThunderBeat 4.1.2. Big sound in a box that never quite fills the room
SHARE

Valerion made its name with projectors, and anyone who has lived with one knows the eternal frustration: a wall-sized picture paired with anaemic built-in speakers. The ThunderBeat 4.1.2 is the company’s answer — a five-piece Dolby Atmos system that ditches the tangle of cables in favour of a single palm-sized dongle.

That dongle slots into your projector or TV via HDMI eARC, and the four satellites plus subwoofer connect wirelessly with claimed latency of under 30ms. It’s a genuinely tidy setup: the only wires you’ll worry about are the power leads for each speaker. Valerion quotes 720W of total output and touts a 360° Dome Sound effect, with support for both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

Each satellite packs a 10cm front-firing full-range driver, a 50mm upfiring full-range driver and a 38mm tweeter, housed in a fairly chunky 23 x 14 x 13cm box weighing 2kg. The subwoofer is compact and narrow — 48 x 15 x 31cm, 7kg — with a single 16.5cm woofer and 120W of amplification, so it tucks discreetly against a wall.

The catch is that this feels basic in 2026. The plastic cabinets don’t feel premium, there’s no wi-fi streaming (Bluetooth only), no companion app, and — most tellingly — no mic-based auto-calibration. You get bass and treble adjustment plus front/surround balance, but no per-speaker tuning and no test tone. When rivals nail room correction automatically, the omission stings. The remote does at least carry a handy built-in screen for input and EQ selection.

So how does it sound? Big and meaty, with a well-integrated subwoofer and clear dialogue. Soundtracks land with satisfying weight and decent tonal balance. But there’s a softness to the attack of each note, and the subtleties in a score go missing — the broad strokes are present, the fine detail isn’t.

The bigger issue is immersion. Where the best in class conjure a seamless dome around the listener, the ThunderBeat behaves like four distinct speakers producing localised pillars of sound. Pans don’t glide from one channel to the next. A Mapping mode spreads audio more evenly for a wider soundstage, but it trades away too much precision to be worth it. Large dynamic swings are handled well; gradual build-ups less so.

Valerion offers an optional wireless centre speaker, but skip it — it’s a sonic mismatch that sounds harsher and less detailed than the satellites, undermining the very channel that carries most dialogue.

  • Pros: big, weighty sound; clear dialogue; well-integrated subwoofer; genuinely simple wireless setup
  • Cons: localised rather than enveloping; limited features and no auto-calibration; cheap-feeling build

At US$799 / £639, the ThunderBeat 4.1.2 comfortably beats the vast majority of TV speakers. But soundbar-based Atmos rivals deliver more integrated, room-filling audio for the same money or less. It’s a decent performer — you can simply do better elsewhere.
