Patchdle. The daily browser game that turns patch notes into a brutal quiz
SHARE

Patch notes are the wallpaper of gaming — endless lists of bug fixes, balance tweaks and content updates that almost nobody reads front to back. Developer Håkon Medhus Fornes took that overlooked corner of the hobby and built a devious daily browser puzzle around it. Patchdle launched on June 9, and it may be one of the most punishing tests of game knowledge you will ever attempt.

The format borrows from Wordle. You get six guesses to name the mystery game. Each wrong answer reveals another line pulled from that game’s real patch notes, and the hints are supposed to get easier as you go. In practice, they often read like the same wall of developer-speak. A recent puzzle offered clues such as “adjusted volume for all character jumpscares” and “fixed an issue with inconsistencies when inserting VHS tapes into the VHS player.” Good luck untangling that from cold.

To keep things from being completely hopeless, Patchdle throws you a couple of lifelines based on how close your guesses land:

  • Green message: “Correct franchise, but wrong game!” — you named a title in the right series.
  • Yellow message: “Made by the same developers!” — you guessed a game from the studio behind the answer.

Beyond those two nudges, you are alone with the patch notes and whatever mental catalogue of games you can muster.

What makes the whole thing weirdly delightful is how much personality leaks through those notes. Buried between dry technical fixes are jokes and lines phrased in the goofiest way imaginable. One June 10 puzzle opened with “Dead babies now have buoyancy in water” and immediately followed it with “Can now pick up and throw puffy dead bodies.” You may have no idea which game that is — but you suddenly want to find out. That, arguably, is Patchdle’s secret weapon: it doubles as a reminder that developers have a lot of fun in a place most players never look.

The difficulty is real, and Patchdle wears it proudly. This is not a warm, gentle daily like the puzzle games designed to give you a quick win before coffee. It rewards deep, occasionally obscure knowledge of how specific games evolved through updates, which means veterans who obsessively track patch histories have a genuine edge.

If a single daily puzzle isn’t enough to feed the obsession — or to break your confidence — there’s an archive. More than 60 puzzles are available to play through, so you can binge past challenges and slowly convince yourself you know less about video games than you thought. It’s free, it lives in your browser, and it is quietly one of the sharpest niche puzzle games around.
