Instante/revelación. The Getty maps a century of Mexican photography

Photography rarely emerges from a vacuum, and few bodies of work prove that point as elegantly as 20th-century Mexican photography. A new exhibition at the Getty Center in Los Angeles sets out to trace exactly those threads — the mentorships, rivalries, and creative exchanges that shaped how a nation saw itself through a lens.

Instante/revelación: Moments in Mexican Photography opens September 1, 2026, and runs through January 3, 2027. It gathers work from 13 influential photographers, spanning from the late 1920s to the mid-2010s — nearly a full century of images charting shifts in both Mexican society and its photographic culture.

The lineup reads like a syllabus of Mexican photography. Among the featured artists are Lola Álvarez Bravo, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Héctor García, Graciela Iturbide, and Pablo Ortiz Monasterio. The show leans into the idea of influence as a living network: photographers responding to, learning from, and pushing against one another across generations.

The title captures the concept neatly. Instantes y revelaciones — instants and revelations — nods both to the decisive fraction of a second that defines a great frame and to the deeper truths those frames can surface. Expect pictures that operate on both registers, from Iturbide’s iconic Nuestra señora de las iguanas to her later series photographed inside Frida Kahlo’s bathroom, and Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s spare, surreal Dos pares de piernas from 1928–29.

The exhibition is built almost entirely from a single act of generosity. The photographs on view were donated by Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser to the Getty Museum over the past 25 years — a slow-built collection that now anchors a survey no single acquisition could have produced.

The curatorial framing puts collaboration and experimentation front and center rather than treating each photographer as an isolated genius. Works like Mariana Yampolsky’s stark rural landscapes, Rodrigo Moya’s La muchacha, ferrocarril viejo, and Pablo Ortiz Monasterio’s 2017 series Desaparecen? together sketch a conversation that runs across decades and social upheaval alike.

“Photography has long served as a powerful means of capturing both personal experience and collective history,” said Timothy Potts, the J. Paul Getty Museum’s director. “‘Instante/’ traces the creative connections among generations of photographers whose images offer profound insights into Mexico’s cultural life, while demonstrating the power of artistic exchange to shape how we see the world.”

For anyone interested in the mechanics of a photographic tradition — how style, subject, and technique get handed down and reinvented — this is a rare chance to see that lineage laid out under one roof. Instante/revelación will be on view at the Getty Center in Los Angeles from September 1, 2026, through January 3, 2027.
