Mutiny. Jason Statham's boat-brawling revenge trip runs aground with critics

Jason Statham has built a career on a very specific promise: he shows up, he glares, he dismantles bad guys with brutal efficiency, and everyone goes home satisfied. Mutiny, his latest, keeps the formula but loses the charm — and the critics have noticed.

Directed by Jean-François Richet — the same filmmaker behind 2023’s ocean-and-air thriller Plane — Mutiny hands Statham a vaguely defined ex-cop or special forces background and drops him aboard a human trafficking vessel carrying women and children. You can guess the rest. He beats the villains up. That, in essence, is the whole movie. At a lean 95 minutes, there’s little room for anything beyond action set pieces, which is either the point or the problem depending on your mood.

The film joins a well-worn Statham portfolio that includes The Transporter, The Mechanic, The Beekeeper, A Working Man and Shelter. But where those titles often landed as enjoyable schlock, Mutiny is currently sitting at a certified rotten 41% on Rotten Tomatoes across 22 reviews.

The knives are out. One critic wrote that the film “has so little personality that you could place it in a bus station, and the experience wouldn’t change one bit. Nobody involved seems to care, and neither should we.” Matt Goldberg at Commentary Track called it a “waste” of Statham’s talents — a sharp line to draw between good schlock and the bad variety.

Not everyone is bailing on it, though. Owen Gleiberman at Variety praised the picture’s rhythm, writing: “It’s all in the timing — the rhythm of revenge murder that’s perfect, because it’s done by any means necessary. Jason Statham is keeping that dream alive.” Ian Sandwell at Digital Spy cut to the core of the appeal, noting the film “won’t convert anybody who foolishly isn’t a fan of ‘Jason Statham gets revenge,’ but everybody else will have a damn good time.”

And that’s really the honest takeaway. Mutiny isn’t trying to convert skeptics or reinvent the genre. It’s Statham killing guys on a boat, and you already know whether that sentence excites you or leaves you cold. The critical consensus suggests this one lands closer to autopilot than his sharper outings, but the die-hards will likely have their fun regardless.

Mutiny lands in theaters on August 21, 2026, courtesy of Lionsgate.
