Columbia House Ends. The Last Mail-Order Media Club Signs Off

Remember filling out a tiny card, licking a stamp, and committing to buy a handful of CDs at “regular club prices”? That ritual is finally over. Columbia House, the mail-order music and movie club that outlived cassette tapes, LaserDiscs and most of physical media itself, is shutting down after 71 years.

The company announced in August 2026 that it will stop accepting new orders after September 15, 2026. Existing memberships and outstanding purchases will still be honored as the operation winds down, so anyone with a pending disc in the pipeline won’t be left empty-handed.

Columbia House launched back in 1955 as a project of Columbia Records, and for decades it was a fixture of American living rooms. Its business model was famously irresistible and mildly infuriating in equal measure: sign up, get an armful of albums for a penny (or close to it), then quietly agree to buy several more at full price over the following year. The infamous negative-option billing — where the “selection of the month” shipped automatically unless you remembered to say no — trained an entire generation in the fine art of reading the small print.

In its heyday the club moved staggering volumes of music, riding the CD boom of the 1980s and 1990s. As tastes shifted, so did the catalog, and in its final form Columbia House had pivoted to a mail-order DVD and Blu-ray business, catering to collectors who still prefer a shelf of physical discs to a login screen and a spinning buffer icon.

The math behind the closure isn’t hard to follow. Streaming services now dominate how people watch films and listen to music, and physical media sales have contracted year after year. A model built on postal delivery, printed catalogs and long-term membership commitments was always going to struggle against instant, on-demand libraries. That Columbia House lasted this far into the streaming era is, frankly, a small miracle.

What’s ending here is more than a company — it’s one of the last living links to a very specific way of discovering media:

  • The waiting game: ordering a disc and anticipating its arrival days later.
  • The commitment: membership terms that felt like signing a lease.
  • The tactile payoff: unwrapping a physical DVD or Blu-ray you actually owned.

For collectors and nostalgia hunters, the practical takeaway is simple. If you’ve been meaning to place one more order — or you want to close out an old membership on your own terms — the window closes on September 15, 2026. After that, the mailbox stays empty, and one of the most recognizable names in mail-order media becomes history.

Seventy-one years is a remarkable run for any consumer service, let alone one whose entire premise depended on the postal system. Columbia House didn’t just sell discs; it defined a habit. And now, quietly, that habit is being retired for good.
