LEGO Studio Ghibli. The Totoro set fans keep dreaming about but can't buy

If you’ve been refreshing LEGO’s product page hoping to snap a brick-built Totoro or a miniature bathhouse from Spirited Away, we have some bittersweet news: there is still no official LEGO Studio Ghibli set. Despite years of fan campaigns and a wave of increasingly polished concept builds, the collaboration everyone wants remains stuck in limbo.

The demand is undeniable. Over the past year, several fan-designed projects inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved films made their way onto LEGO Ideas, the platform where community creators pitch original sets and gather public support. Some of these submissions crossed the coveted 10,000 supporter threshold — the milestone that, in theory, earns a project a formal review by LEGO’s design team.

Reaching 10,000 backers is no small feat. It signals serious enthusiasm and usually reflects months of promotion, iteration and community goodwill. Yet even with that momentum, the Ghibli-themed projects didn’t make the cut. LEGO’s rejected submissions from the past year include multiple sets built around My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, meaning that despite hitting the numbers, none qualified to become an official LEGO Ideas product.

Why the repeated rejections? LEGO doesn’t publicly break down every decision, but the Ideas review process weighs far more than raw support counts. Licensing complexity, brand fit, market overlap with existing themes and manufacturability all factor in. Studio Ghibli, famously protective of its intellectual property, is also a partner that any company would need to court carefully — and that kind of licensing dance can stall even the most popular fan pitch.

For now, that leaves the Ghibli LEGO dream exactly where it has always been: as a collection of unofficial concept projects. These builds live on as renders and community showcases, admired but unbuildable, since none have been officially produced or released by LEGO.

  • Status: No official LEGO Studio Ghibli set exists
  • Themes submitted: My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away
  • Milestone reached: 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas
  • Outcome: Rejected — did not qualify for production

The silver lining is that persistent fan interest tends to move the needle over time. Franchises once considered long shots — from Dungeons & Dragons to Home Alone — eventually landed official sets after years of grassroots pressure. Whether Studio Ghibli follows the same path depends largely on whether LEGO and Ghibli can align on a licensing deal.

Until that happens, the closest you’ll get to a plastic-brick Catbus is admiring what the community has already dreamed up. It’s a tantalizing near-miss — proof that the appetite is enormous, and that the biggest obstacle isn’t imagination, but paperwork.
