Japanese high-end specialist Esoteric has never been shy about chasing the last decimal point of precision, but the new T-01 takes things to a level that borders on the theatrical. At its heart sits a contactless magnetic drive system that the company reckons delivers “uncompromising precision, energy, and realism” — and, judging by the price, a fair bit of financial commitment too.
The headline trick is the Magne-Float platter. Using magnetic repulsion, it reduces the effective mass of the 13kg platter to roughly 4kg, dramatically cutting spindle bearing friction. Less friction means less mechanical noise creeping into the groove, which is exactly the sort of problem obsessive vinyl engineering exists to solve.
Then there’s the drive itself. Dubbed Esoteric MagneDrive and first seen in the flagship Grandioso T1, the patented system was more than five years in development. A soft iron induction wheel surrounds the lower part of the aluminium platter, spinning in response to a magnetic driver on the drive motor. Crucially, nothing physically touches — the platter is fully isolated from the motor’s vibrations, which Esoteric says yields “extraordinary rotational silence, stability and high-torque performance”.
The T-01 borrows plenty else from the Grandioso T1, including a triple-layer aluminium and MDF cabinet and 10MHz external clock synchronisation. That clock sync is compatible with Esoteric’s G-01XD and G-05 Master Clock units, so this deck is very much designed to slot into an existing all-Esoteric system rather than sit alone.
On the practical side, the turntable runs at 33⅓ and 45 RPM with a generous ±12 per cent speed adjustment in 0.1 per cent increments. Wow and flutter is quoted at 0.06 per cent or less (W.R.M.S.). The design splits into a main unit and a separate power supply to improve sound isolation, and the whole thing tips the scales at 35kg. Power consumption is a modest 8W, dropping to 0.3W in standby — a rare nod to efficiency in a product otherwise engineered without compromise.
- Platter: 13kg reduced to ~4kg effective mass via Magne-Float
- Drive: contactless Esoteric MagneDrive
- Speeds: 33⅓ / 45 RPM, ±12% adjustment in 0.1% steps
- Clock sync: 10MHz external, G-01XD / G-05 compatible
- Weight: 35kg
Buyers can choose their configuration. The T-01AL arrives without a tonearm at £38,999 / $46,000, while the full package including the supplied tonearm costs £41,999 / $50,000. International shipping is scheduled to begin at the end of September 2026.
It’s an eye-watering sum, but for the audiophile who wants their master tapes reproduced with, in Esoteric’s words, “breathtaking realism, musical energy and emotional depth”, the T-01 makes a compelling — if extravagant — case.
