Honor Play20A. A budget phone with a second screen where you least expect it
SHARE

Slap a tiny display onto the back of a phone and you instantly have a talking point. That’s exactly the trick Honor pulled with the Play20A, a device that carries a 2-inch smart screen tucked into its rear camera module — something no other non-folding Honor phone offers.

On paper, it’s a clever idea. The secondary panel lets you frame and shoot photos using the main rear camera, which is objectively the better shooter on this handset. The problem? That main camera rides a single 13MP sensor. It’ll comfortably beat the 5MP front-facing camera for selfies and quick group shots — but let’s be honest, clearing that bar takes barely any effort.

Despite what the busy camera island suggests, the 13MP unit is the only real camera on the back. So the rear screen ends up being less about pro-grade selfies and more about a fun, novel way to compose a frame — a feature you’d normally find reserved for pricier flagships or foldables.

Everything else about the Play20A reads like a straightforward budget device built for endurance rather than benchmarks. Here’s what you’re working with:

  • Main display: 6.9-inch LCD with a 90Hz refresh rate
  • Rear display: 2-inch smart screen in the camera module
  • Chipset: MediaTek Helio G81
  • Memory: 4GB RAM with 128GB storage
  • Battery: a hefty 6000 mAh
  • Software: Android 16 Go
  • Durability: IP69K rating

The spec sheet tells a coherent story. A large, low-cost LCD, an entry-level MediaTek processor and Android’s lightweight Go edition all point squarely at buyers who want a big, dependable screen without paying flagship money. The 6000 mAh battery is the real hero here, promising the kind of multi-day stamina that a Helio G81 sipping power on Android Go can genuinely deliver.

The IP69K rating is the surprise guest. That’s a tough dust-and-water certification more commonly seen on rugged industrial gear than on cheap phones, which suggests the Play20A is aimed at people who put their hardware through the wringer.

The Play20A was announced in August 2026 and is currently available across GCC markets — with the exception of Saudi Arabia. Availability in the US, UK and Europe hasn’t been confirmed, and there’s no verified pricing in dollars, pounds or euros for those regions yet.

So is it a triumph or a missed opportunity? A bit of both. The dual-screen concept is genuinely fresh at this end of the market, and the endurance-first hardware makes sense. But pairing that eye-catching rear display with a lone 13MP camera feels like Honor built an interesting stage and forgot to hire the star performer. With a stronger camera, the Play20A could have been a small revelation instead of just an intriguing curiosity.
