Wizards of the Coast is doubling down on magic with Dungeons & Dragons: Arcana Unleashed, a hardcover expansion that hands every class a bigger bag of tricks — and, in many cases, a new companion to drag along on the adventure. The book goes on sale September 15, 2026, and preorders are already open at US$49.99 for the physical edition.

The pitch here is breadth. Arcana Unleashed is built around player choice, cramming an impressive amount of new content between its covers. The headline numbers:

  • 8 new arcane subclasses to reshape how your character channels magic
  • 33 new and revised spells, mixing fresh options with tweaks to familiar staples
  • 19 magic creatures — the source of all those promised pets and familiars
  • 47 magical items to loot, craft or covet
  • 9 arcane factions and 6 group patrons for tying your party into the wider world

That’s a lot of moving parts, and it signals where modern D&D is heading: less about a single power fantasy, more about letting tables mix and match. The addition of group patrons is especially telling, giving an entire party a shared benefactor — and shared obligations — rather than leaving everyone to fend for themselves.

Rounding out the package is an introductory adventure, Tomb of the Shadow Serpents, meant to put all these new toys straight into play. It’s a sensible inclusion — nobody wants to buy a book of shiny subclasses and then have nowhere to test them. The catch is that the adventure leans linear, funneling players down a fairly fixed path. For a supplement whose entire identity is options, a more open-ended scenario would have been a better showcase. Still, as a tutorial dungeon for a group eager to experiment with new spells and summoned creatures, it does the job.

The overall impression is a toolbox rather than a campaign centerpiece. If your table has been itching to retool characters, add a menagerie of magical creatures, or weave in factions and patrons to give a homebrew world more texture, Arcana Unleashed offers plenty of raw material. Just don’t expect the bundled adventure to be the reason you pick it up.

At US$49.99 for a hardcover this dense with content, it’s a fair ask for players who live for character building. Whether the linear starter quest undercuts the book’s freewheeling spirit is something each Dungeon Master will have to judge for themselves — but the sheer volume of subclasses, spells and beasts on offer makes this an easy one to shelf next to the core rulebooks.
