Storm Radar for CarPlay. The Weather Channel finally lands on your dashboard

CarPlay supports hundreds of apps, but Apple’s own Weather app has never been one of them. That gap just got a little smaller. As of today, The Weather Channel’s Storm Radar app for iPhone works directly with CarPlay, putting a live weather map front and center on your car’s display.

This isn’t a bolt-on afterthought. The Weather Channel has spent the year turning Storm Radar into a proper Apple-platform citizen. The iPhone and iPad versions picked up an AI-powered forecast feature earlier in 2026, an Apple Watch app followed, and now version 4.0.19 brings the whole thing into the car.

Here’s what the CarPlay build actually does. You get a map centered on your location, with a toggle between satellite view and the default map background. On top of that you can layer live data: radar, clouds, and precipitation. It’s the kind of at-a-glance information that’s genuinely useful when you’re deciding whether to wait out a downpour or beat it out of the parking lot.

Navigation is where things get more interesting. Storm Radar doesn’t just show conditions where you’re sitting — it displays your current weather alongside your ETA and the weather expected at your destination. So you’ll know if you’re driving from sunshine into a squall before you get there.

The clever part is that it stays live. According to The Weather Channel, CarPlay support includes automatic rerouting and weather alerts along your route that refresh as you drive. In practice, that means the app can steer you around trouble and keep flagging alerts as conditions shift, rather than handing you a stale snapshot from when you first pulled out of the driveway.

The update spreads beyond the dashboard, too. Today’s release also adds new home screen widgets and a redesigned Apple Watch app, rounding out Storm Radar’s presence across the iPhone, iPad, Watch, and now CarPlay. The full release notes for version 4.0.19 are live on the App Store.

For anyone who has spent time squinting at a phone mount to check whether that gray sky is about to open up, having radar and route-aware alerts baked straight into CarPlay is a small but welcome upgrade. Weather apps have been slowly filling the gap Apple left on the dashboard, and Storm Radar just became one of the more capable options in that growing list.
