Fujifilm filled a long-standing gap in its X-mount lineup on September 3, 2026, when it announced the Fujinon XF400mm f/4.5 R LM OIS WR — a super-telephoto prime that gives APS-C shooters a full-frame-equivalent focal length of 609mm. The company is positioning it among the very best glass it has ever made, promising some of the highest optical performance in the entire XF lens line.
The optical formula backs up that claim on paper: 21 elements arranged in 14 groups, including 2 Super ED and 4 ED elements to keep chromatic aberrations in check at a focal length where color fringing usually thrives. The aperture runs from f/4.5 to f/22 through a 9-bladed diaphragm, which should serve the smooth background rendering wildlife and motorsport photographers expect from a fast prime.
What stands out most, though, is the weight. At 1,245 grams, with a maximum diameter of 104.5mm and a length of 239mm, this is a 600mm-class field of view in a package many photographers can genuinely handhold all day. Fujifilm says it deliberately shifted the center of gravity toward the middle of the barrel to reduce front-heaviness during handheld shooting. “You need a lens that gets you close to the action without disturbing the scene or wearing you down over a long day,” said Victor Ha, VP of the Electronic Imaging Division at Fujifilm North America.
Handholding a 609mm-equivalent lens only works with serious stabilization, and the XF400mm f/4.5 delivers up to 5.5 stops of optical image stabilization. Autofocus is driven by a high-speed linear motor that Fujifilm describes as fast, accurate, and nearly silent — a meaningful detail when the subject is a skittish bird rather than a race car. Working controls include a focus preset function, a focus limiter, and a control button placed near the front of the lens.
Since this is a lens built for the outdoors, weather resistance gets proper attention:
- 20 sealed points against dust and moisture
- Rated operation at temperatures as low as -10°C (14°F)
- Compatibility with Fujifilm’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, stretching the focal length to 560mm and 800mm — an 853mm and 1,219mm full-frame equivalent
