Resident Evil. Zach Cregger already has sequel thoughts before release

Zach Cregger built his Resident Evil as a closed loop — one night, one courier, one city coming apart. Then, by his own admission, he kept thinking about what happens after the credits.

Asked whether directing the film scratched his itch for the franchise, Cregger did not pretend otherwise: “This movie was designed to be a one-off, so that itch was scratched, yes. But I can’t help myself…I already have some thoughts of like what could happen…going forward.” That is not a greenlight, and nothing has been announced — but it is a director who has clearly mapped more of Raccoon City than fits in one feature.

The film itself is a reboot rather than a continuation of the earlier movie series. It follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier whose delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital drops him into a T-virus outbreak turning the city’s residents into something considerably worse than customers. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser and Johnno Wilson appear in supporting roles as Umbrella Corporation employees.

Cregger has framed the script as an original story rather than a scene-for-scene adaptation, set during the Raccoon City outbreak of Resident Evil 2 but moved to a contemporary period. He has compared its tone to Evil Dead II (1987) — which, for anyone who saw Barbarian or Weapons, is a useful warning about how quickly the register can flip.

Abrams, who spends most of the running time being chased, described the grind of keeping a single-night survival story coherent on set: “I feel like we were constantly kind of talking like, ‘Wait, where am I here?’ You know, like how tired am I? How hurt am I? Even tracking something like the blood throughout: like, how much blood do I have on me?”

The production numbers behind it:

  • Produced by Constantin Film, PlayStation Productions and Vertigo Entertainment, with Columbia Pictures winning a distribution bidding war against Warner Bros. and Netflix in March 2025
  • Principal photography began October 10, 2025 in Prague, shot by cinematographer Dariusz Wolski
  • Budget of $80 million, runtime of 94 minutes
  • World premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 17, 2026
  • Theatrical release September 18, 2026 through Sony Pictures Releasing, including IMAX screens

Tickets are already listed on the film’s official site, which carries the blunt tagline “Exclusively in Movie Theatres September 18.”

Whether Cregger’s ideas ever reach a second script depends on what happens over that opening weekend — video game adaptations have a long history of directors with plans and studios with calculators. But the useful detail here is that the ideas exist before the first film has even met an audience, which is not usually how franchise obligation works. This one sounds like it started as curiosity.
