Apple stopped watching the foldable market from the sidelines on September 9, 2026, when it unveiled the iPhone Duo. The company’s own framing left little room for modesty: according to Apple, iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. CEO John Ternus added that the phone redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.
The layout is a book-style fold. Closed, you hold a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer screen that Apple says delivers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Opened, it becomes a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding panel with a nano-texture finish that cuts glare and plays down the crease. Both displays carry ProMotion, Always On and up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness. Apple calls the unfolded body the thinnest iPhone ever and builds the frame from mirror-polished grade 5 titanium.
The rest of the sheet reads like a flagship that skipped a generation:
- Chip — A20 Pro with a 6-core CPU up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine with twice the compute power
- Rear cameras — 48MP Fusion main with 2x optical telephoto plus a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, 4K120 Dolby Vision video
- Front cameras — a Center Stage camera on the cover and a FaceTime camera hidden beneath the inner display
- Battery — up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen, up to 44 hours on the outer one, up to 24 hours of mixed use, and 50 percent charge in around 20 minutes wired
- Software — iOS 27, reworked for the two-screen layout
BGR reports the folded body measures 11.3 mm and drops to 5.2 mm unfolded, with 12 GB of RAM behind the 2 nm A20 Pro and a hinge built from 100 components.
Which brings us to the elephant in the room. Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra on July 22, 2026, and the numbers line up uncomfortably closely. The standard Z Fold 8 pairs a 5.5-inch cover display with a 7.6-inch interior panel for $1,899, exactly the same inner diagonal Apple has chosen. The Z Fold 8 Ultra stretches to a 6.5-inch cover and an 8-inch inside for $2,099. Apple is not undercutting anyone here, and it is not trying to.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256 GB, with 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB above it, topping out at $3,199. Colours are Star White and Night Sky. Preorders open on October 16, 2026 at 5 a.m. PT, and the phone reaches more than 70 markets on October 23, 2026, with a further 28 regions on October 30, 2026.
So Apple arrives with a device that matches the inner screen size of the mainstream Galaxy Z Fold 8 and sits above it on price. The pitch is not value. It is the argument that nobody else has folded a phone properly yet.
