X XChat. The encrypted messenger quietly vanishes from both app stores
SHARE

X’s attempt to split direct messages into their own app appears to be over almost as soon as it began. On September 14, 2026, XChat, the standalone messaging app for iPhone and iPad, stopped showing up on the App Store. It no longer appeared in search results, and direct links to the listing returned an unavailability error.

9to5Mac’s Zac Hall was among the first to spot it, posting on X that the iOS app had “just disappeared.” At first the Android version still seemed to be available on Google Play. That changed quickly: in an update, 9to5Mac reported that XChat had disappeared from the Google Play Store too.

Not Apple’s doing

An app vanishing from the App Store often means Apple has pulled it. 9to5Mac says that is not what happened here. A source familiar with the matter said the developer removed the app of its own accord. X gave no public explanation as of September 14, 2026. MacRumors also noted that X appeared to have removed the app itself without saying why. With both listings gone, the likeliest explanation is that X is shutting XChat down after just a few months.

A short life

XChat arrived on iPhone and iPad on April 24, 2026. X pitched it as a way to “chat with anyone on X in a private, focused space built for conversation.” Before that, the app had been in testing since the previous year. Instead of burying messages under the main timeline, it put them in a dedicated app with a privacy-first set of features:

  • End-to-end encrypted messaging, with no ads and no tracking
  • Disappearing messages and the option to block screenshots
  • Group chats with up to 350 members, plus joinable links
  • Video calling
  • Message permission controls, customizable left-swipe actions, light and dark modes and several app icons

The iOS app also used Apple’s iOS 26 design and keyboard, which made it look newer than the main X app, still built around iOS 18-era elements. It had gaps, though. CarPlay wasn’t supported at launch.

Android came next. On May 27, 2026, The Tech Portal reported that XChat had opened pre-registration on Google Play. That listing promised message editing, audio and video calls, large file sharing and group chats. It also said you wouldn’t need a phone number, since you sign in with an existing X account. The idea was simple: turn your X social graph into a ready-made contact list, without asking for a SIM-linked identity.

What it means for users

Because both store listings are gone, new users can’t download XChat on either platform. There’s no word yet on what happens to people who already have it installed, or to their message history. X’s regular in-app direct messages are a separate feature, and nothing so far suggests they are affected.

Encrypted messaging is a crowded market, and XChat was up against established apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. Pulling the app from both stores within about five months of its iPhone debut suggests X either couldn’t get enough people to use a separate app or has decided to fold its messaging plans back into the main X experience. Until X explains the move, XChat looks like a short-lived experiment.
