JBL Synthesis SDR-38. A flagship AV receiver at less than half its list price
SHARE

Flagship AV receivers usually hold their value stubbornly, which makes the latest UK offer on the JBL Synthesis SDR-38 stand out. What Hi-Fi? published the deal on September 14, 2026: the receiver, which lists at £7,300 at Richer Sounds, can drop to £3,499. That is £3,801 off, or 52 per cent.

Getting the full discount takes two steps:

  • Join the free Richer Sounds VIP club, which brings the price down to £3,999.
  • Enter the What Hi-Fi? promo code WHFJBL500 at checkout to take off another £500.

Without both, you pay one of the higher prices. The code is a What Hi-Fi? exclusive, and the magazine called the final figure a new low for the SDR-38.

What you get for the money

JBL’s full name for it is the SDR-38 16-channel Class G Immersive Surround Sound AV Receiver, and the specs back up the flagship label. It can process 16 channels and has seven channels of built-in Class G amplification. JBL rates it at 100W into 8 ohms, or 180W into 4 ohms, with all seven channels driven. Class G switches between two supply rails. The amp runs on the lower rail most of the time and brings in the higher one only when the music or movie demands more power. That lets it stay efficient without running out of headroom when a film gets loud.

On the video side, the SDR-38 has HDMI 2.1 sockets with the full 48Gbps bandwidth. For sound, it handles Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D and is IMAX Enhanced certified. Room correction comes from Dirac Live with Bass Control, and Dante digital audio networking is built in for custom installs.

There are plenty of streaming options:

  • Roon Ready, with hi-res and MQA support
  • Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect
  • Google Chromecast and Apple AirPlay 2
  • Bluetooth with the aptX HD codec

The chassis matches the price tag, with an OLED display, controls on the front panel and a hefty, premium-feeling volume wheel.

Why reviewers rate it

The SDR-38 earned five stars from What Hi-Fi?, and the main complaint was the £7,300 price. In testing with Dune in Dolby Atmos, the reviewers said the aircraft hangar scene had a grand, expansive sense of scale. They also noted the warmth and character it gave to voices during the quieter Stillsuit conversation. The car chase in The Batman came through with excellent detail and clarity, and the reviewers heard no gaps between speakers. They also warned that setup and operation lean toward enthusiasts, so this isn’t a plug-and-play box for casual users.

That fits who the receiver is for. The SDR-38 suits dedicated home cinemas, where its power, 16-channel processing and pro-level room correction can really be put to use. What Hi-Fi? said the performance justified the cost even at full price. At £3,499 with the VIP membership and code, it becomes much easier to recommend.
