The Apple Watch Series 12 looks like an old friend. As The Verge notes in its review, it keeps the same design, buttons, sizes and sensor types as the generations before it. The real story is under the glass: Apple has rebuilt the watch around continuous health tracking, and the reviewer calls it the start of a new wearable era.
Apple announced the Series 12 on September 9, 2026, and pre-orders opened the same day. The watch starts at $399, or from $11.99 a month over 24 months through Apple’s Upgrade program. It goes on sale on September 18, 2026.
The Health Sensing System
The main upgrade is what Apple calls the Health Sensing System, with redesigned optical and electrical heart sensors and larger, more power-efficient green LEDs. The result is heart rate tracking that is truly continuous. According to Apple, the Series 12 measures heart rate every five seconds, all day long. Heart rate variability (HRV) is now measured up to 24 times more often, and Apple splits it into two views: Recovery HRV and overall HRV. The Health app also now shows your vitals for both the night and the day.
All that data feeds a new Readiness score. It runs from 0 to 10 and is based on your recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep score. It then gives you one of four suggestions: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It. The Verge sees this as Apple catching up with a wearable market that has already embraced AI-driven health insights. A Health Age feature will show how certain metrics compare with your actual age. It is part of a redesigned Health app that Apple says will arrive later in 2026.

AI on the wrist
The second half of Apple’s plan, as The Verge describes it, is to lead in AI wearables that surface useful information based on your whole day. watchOS 27 brings Siri AI, which Apple describes as an entirely new version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence. It also adds Audio Intelligence features: Sound Recognition, Live Rewind, Siri Recap and Shazam. Apple says Live Rewind and Siri Recap will arrive in beta later in 2026.
So the Series 12 isn’t a redesign. It’s a platform update: a faster chip, more frequent sensor readings and software that turns those readings into daily advice. For anyone upgrading from an older Apple Watch, the difference won’t show on the outside. It will show in the Health app.
