Netflix The Seemingly Perfect Family. A No. 1 hit that viewers love to hate

Topping the Netflix chart and winning over its audience turn out to be two different things. The streamer’s newest No. 1 movie is “The Seemingly Perfect Family”, a Lifetime thriller based on a true story. An 18-year-old former foster kid (Rylee Reagan) lies her way into an au pair job and then finds that the wealthy “dream” family she works for has deep, dark secrets.

The film premiered on Netflix on September 15, 2026, and climbed to the top of the service’s weekly rankings within days. The backlash came just as fast. Some Rotten Tomatoes users call it “probably the worst movie I have ever seen,” with “predictable, awful writing and acting.” As Tom’s Guide pointed out, a chart position is a measure of clicks, not quality. For anyone who wants a domestic thriller that earns its tension, the Netflix catalog has better options. Here are three.

“Leave the World Behind”

Sam Esmail wrote and directed this 2023 apocalyptic thriller, and it has a big-name cast: Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, Kevin Bacon and Myha’la. Barack and Michelle Obama produced it through their Higher Ground Productions. Amanda Sandford (Roberts) and her husband Clay (Hawke) take their kids on a luxury weekend at a Long Island rental. Then the homeowner (Ali) and his daughter show up in the middle of the night with news of citywide blackouts, cyberattacks and possibly a much larger conspiracy.

The film is based on Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name. According to Rotten Tomatoes, critics called it “an exceptionally well-acted apocalyptic thriller” that “steadily draws the viewer in despite its leisurely pace and somewhat simplistic messaging.”

“The Occupant”

This 2020 Spanish thriller from David Pastor and Àlex Pastor is about a very ordinary fear: losing a great apartment. Javier Muñoz (Javier Gutiérrez) used to be a high-flying advertising executive with a comfortable Barcelona home. After he loses his job and can’t even land an unpaid internship, he moves into a much smaller rental with his wife Marga (Ruth Díaz) and son Dani (Cristian Muñoz).

The trouble is that Javier kept the keys to his old place. He starts slipping in secretly and grows more and more obsessed with the new occupants: businessman Tomás (Mario Casas), his wife Lara (Bruna Cusí) and their daughter Mónica (Iris Vallés). The film never needs explosions to be unsettling.

“Gone Girl”

David Fincher’s modern classic is leaving Netflix on October 1, so this recommendation has a deadline. Rosamund Pike plays Amy Elliott Dunne, who disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary. Her husband Nick (Ben Affleck), a writing professor, becomes the prime suspect for both the police and the public as the case turns into a media circus. The film’s real business is revenge on a lying, cheating husband.

Pike earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for the role. Per Rotten Tomatoes, critics praised the film as “dark, intelligent, and stylish” and credited it with “bringing the best out of stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.”

  • Leave the World Behind: an apocalyptic slow burn with an all-star cast
  • The Occupant: a Spanish tale of obsession and a lost home
  • Gone Girl: a Fincher thriller, on Netflix until October 1

All three are clear upgrades on the current No. 1, and each one delivers the twisted-family premise that “The Seemingly Perfect Family” couldn’t.
