Motorola Qira. The AI assistant finally graduates past a single phone
SHARE

Motorola’s Qira spent most of 2026 as an assistant you could read about far more easily than you could actually use. That changed on September 22, 2026, when the company confirmed that Qira arrives with the Android 17 update — and, just as importantly, named which phones are invited.

The guest list is short: Signature, Razr and Edge. Those are the only three Motorola series getting Qira, and they get it as they receive Android 17. Before this, the assistant had shipped on exactly one handset — the Edge 70 Max — after Motorola and parent company Lenovo unveiled Qira at CES 2026.

Motorola bills Qira as a “single AI experience that spans across Motorola and Lenovo products”, and that cross-device framing is the entire pitch. Rather than a chatbot bolted onto the launcher, Qira is pitched as system-level intelligence with a knowledge base that follows you between a phone and a laptop. On the phone, the feature set Motorola describes covers:

  • transcribing and summarising conversations;
  • surfacing suggestions and setting reminders;
  • creating images, stickers and avatars;
  • generating wallpapers from a photo of a pattern;
  • summarising notifications and completing tasks on your behalf;
  • accepting voice, text, photo and video input.

The Android 17 rollout is the mobile half of a larger push Lenovo laid out on September 3, 2026 in Berlin. That announcement extended Qira to eligible Lenovo PCs with 16GB of memory — previously the assistant was reserved for higher-memory configurations — taking supported hardware past 80 PC configurations across commercial and consumer lines, alongside select tablets and Motorola smartphones. It also made the moto watch ultra the first wearable to support Lenovo & Motorola Qira, where you raise your wrist or say “Hey Qira” to ask a question.

The other half of that update was plumbing, which is usually where assistants live or die. Working with Workato, Lenovo wired Qira into Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, Slack, Outlook Mail, Outlook Calendar, Notion and Perplexity — the Notion tie-up covers editing and retrieving project information, while Perplexity handles research with visual references. Lenovo also added prioritised notification summaries across devices and a Catch Me Up digest, with the cross-device knowledge base kept local-first in encrypted on-device storage and syncing only if the user opts in.

Two caveats are worth holding onto. Qira currently speaks six languages, with more promised, and Lenovo has been explicit that the rollout is gradual, with timing varying by device and market. And the series split matters: Android 17 itself is heading to a far broader slice of Motorola’s catalogue, but Qira is not following it everywhere. If your phone does not wear a Signature, Razr or Edge badge, the Android 17 update is the part you are getting — the assistant is not.
