PMC MB2 SE. A 58kg studio monitor that tamed the What Hi-Fi? test room
SHARE

Few speakers wear their studio pedigree as openly as the PMC MB2 SE. PMC stands for Professional Monitoring Company, and its very first model, the original MB1 monitor, arrived in 1993. More than three decades later, the MB2 SE follows that template almost literally: a huge, blocky cabinet, a three-way driver line-up and transmission-line bass loading. In a review published by What Hi-Fi? on 1 October 2026, the speaker was tested at £34,095 / $49,999, and it scored five out of five for both sound and build.

A standmount in name only

Technically the MB2 SE is a standmount, but at 87cm tall, 38cm wide and 53.5cm deep it is about the size of many floorstanders. Each cabinet weighs 58kg, and PMC lists the stand separately at 17kg. What Hi-Fi? compared a single unit to a washing machine for visual presence and warned that people with modest listening rooms need not apply. The cabinets come in four real-wood finishes: Grand Walnut, Amarone, Natural Oak and Jet Black.

What’s inside

  • Tweeter: 27mm SONOLEX soft dome, ferrofluid cooled
  • Midrange: PMC75 SE, a 75mm soft dome
  • Bass: 31cm Radial driver with an exposed finned exoskeleton that acts as a heat sink for the voice coil
  • Crossover: 380Hz – 3.8kHz
  • Frequency response: 20Hz-25kHz (PMC figure)
  • Sensitivity: 90dB; impedance: 8 ohms
  • Recommended amp power: 10 – 500W
  • Connections: three pairs of 4mm sockets for tri-wiring or tri-amping

The real story is the cabinet. PMC’s Advanced Transmission Line sends the rear output of the bass driver along a folded, heavily damped path with an effective length of 3m. Most of the energy is absorbed on the way, and only the lowest frequencies come out of the large vent at the top of the front baffle, in phase with the woofer. The folded path also braces the cabinet internally, so the box ends up extremely rigid.

How it sounds

What Hi-Fi? drove the pair with a Naim ND 555/555 PS DR streamer, a Technics SL-1000R turntable and a Burmester 088/911 Mk III pre/power combo. It also tried PMC’s own Cor integrated amplifier. The magazine’s 3 x 7 x 5m room was described as probably at the lower end of what these monitors need. Even so, the reviewers reported a wide, stable soundstage and huge volume capability without any hardness. They singled out the bass as the highlight: deep, powerful and tuneful, with authority they called a match for anything they had tested. Voices kept their natural warmth, and the bass stayed balanced even at low volume, which makes the MB2 SE a surprisingly good late-night speaker.

There are trade-offs. The soundstage doesn’t quite break free of the big cabinets the way smaller speakers can, and the reviewers warned that such a transparent design will expose weaker electronics and poor recordings. The only real drawback they listed was that the price and size put the MB2 SE out of reach for most buyers. For anyone with the room and a system to match, the verdict was simple: these are speakers you have to hear.
