A foldable phone lives or dies by its apps. A stretched, letterboxed app on a big inner screen makes a premium device look half-finished. Apple clearly knows this. On October 5, 2026, the company opened App Store Connect to apps and games optimized for the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, well ahead of the device reaching customers.
The dates on Apple’s own iPhone Duo page: pre-orders start at 5:00 a.m. PT on October 16, and the phone is available starting October 23, 2026. Pricing starts at $1999.
What developers have to do
Apple’s developer notice lays out a short checklist:
- Build or recompile with Xcode 27.1. This release adds development support for iPhone Duo, and Apple has already made it available to download.
- Test with Device Hub. Developers can use it to see how their apps behave on iPhone Duo across all poses and orientations.
- Refresh App Store assets. Updated screenshot and app preview specifications now cover iPhone Duo. Apple also provides design guidance, downloadable templates and a new preview tool in App Store Connect that shows how product pages will look on the foldable.
- Submit. iPhone Duo optimized apps and games can be submitted in App Store Connect from October 5, 2026.
According to GSMArena, apps built or recompiled with Xcode 27.1 will get an App Store badge telling users they are optimized for iPhone Duo. That gives developers a clear reason not to wait. Apple is also running in-person iPhone Duo workshops for developers, with sign-ups on its developer events page.
Then comes the deadline. Starting April 2027, any app or game submitted to the App Store will need to include iPhone Duo screenshots. In practice, every developer will eventually have to check how their software looks on the folding screen.
Why the extra attention
The hardware explains Apple’s push. Opened up, iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED folding display at 1878-by-2670 pixels (430 ppi) with a nano-texture finish. Folded, it uses a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display. Apple says the inner and outer screens share the same aspect ratio. It also says the open display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s. Apps that assume a single fixed phone layout will stand out quickly on a screen like that.
The rest of the specs, from Apple’s spec sheet:
- A20 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and Dual 16-core Neural Engine
- 48MP Dual Fusion camera system and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen
- Titanium foldable design, 5.2 mm thick open, 11.3 mm closed, 254 grams
- 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities, in Night Sky and Star White
The tooling is out and the badge is a clear incentive. If developers act on both, iPhone Duo should reach buyers on October 23 with some apps already built for its screen. The real test will be whether the big names have updated by then.
