Sony has gone back to the wire. The new IER-M500 are a pair of wired in-ear monitors built not for commuters or gym-goers, but for the people standing under stage lights — musicians and performers who need to hear exactly what they’re playing, even when a wall of amplifiers is roaring behind them.
Developed alongside monitoring engineers, the IER-M500 lean hard into the demands of live work. The headline is isolation: a fully sealed enclosure paired with a large acoustic chamber that keeps outside noise out, which is precisely what you want when the crowd is louder than the mix. That same chamber does double duty on the sound side, backing up a single 5mm dynamic driver in pursuit of deep, controlled bass, while an optimised internal structure aims for cleaner, more refined highs.
The spec sheet stays honest and focused. Frequency response runs a wide 10Hz–40kHz, and the buds are Hi-Res Audio compatible — genuinely useful for detailed monitoring rather than a marketing sticker. Each earpiece weighs just 6.9g without its detachable 1.6m cable, which terminates in a plain 3.5mm jack. No Bluetooth, no battery, no latency — for stage monitoring, that’s a feature, not an omission.
Fit gets serious attention too. Sony includes what it calls fitting supporters — a small loop at the top of each earpiece that tucks under the ridge of your inner ear to lock everything in place, so a headbang or a sprint across the stage won’t send an earbud flying. Four sizes of noise-isolating tips are in the box to help you find a proper seal.
Sweat is the eternal enemy of stage gear, and Sony has thought about it. The IER-M500 don’t carry an official IP rating, but the company says they can handle moisture — splashes and human sweat — without much drama. That’s a sensible, unglamorous promise for something destined to spend its life dripping under hot lights.
