Samsung Health. Hand over your data for AI or watch it vanish
SHARE

Opening the Samsung Health app has turned into an ultimatum for some users. A new consent notice is asking people to sign off on the use of their health data for AI training and modeling — and the fine print carries real teeth. Decline, and you won’t just lose the ability to sync your data with your Samsung account; the data itself will be deleted.

That’s a sharper edge than the usual privacy toggle. Most apps treat AI-training consent as an opt-in that quietly defaults to off. Here, saying no comes with a penalty rather than a shrug.

If you do agree, the scope of what Samsung collects is broad. According to the notice, the company will gather and process:

  • Health and wellness data — the day-to-day metrics the app already tracks;
  • Medication data;
  • Health records;
  • Cycle tracking data.

Samsung says this information “will be used for AI training and modelling, including human review, to improve Samsung Health.” That phrase — human review — is the part worth pausing on. It means real people, not just algorithms, may look at data as intimate as menstrual cycles and medication logs. For a category this sensitive, that’s a meaningful ask, and one users are being nudged to accept quickly to keep their history intact.

The timing isn’t accidental. These changes are set to land first on the Galaxy Watch 9 series, expected to debut at Samsung’s Unpacked event on July 22. Samsung has been leaning hard into AI-driven wellness features across its ecosystem, and training those models requires exactly the kind of longitudinal, personal health data that Samsung Health has been quietly accumulating on millions of wrists and phones.

There’s a logic to it. Better models can mean smarter sleep analysis, sharper trend detection, more useful nudges. But the trade being offered here is unusually blunt: participate in the AI pipeline, or have your logged history erased. For anyone who has spent years building a record of workouts, weight, sleep and reproductive health inside the app, deletion is a steep cost for opting out.

It also raises a practical question for cautious users. If you decline and your data is wiped, exporting or backing up your history before the notice forces a decision becomes the only way to preserve it. Anyone uneasy about human reviewers combing through medication or cycle data should read the consent screen carefully rather than tapping through to reach the dashboard.

The broader signal is hard to miss. As wearables mature, the value increasingly sits not in the sensors but in the data they generate — and the companies building AI on top of that data are becoming more assertive about claiming it. Samsung Health’s new prompt is a preview of how that negotiation may look across the industry: consent framed less as a choice and more as a condition of keeping what’s already yours.
