Fake News Sites. How AI-cloned publishers are draining your wallet

Spotting a story on a trusted news site usually lowers your guard. That instinct is exactly what cybercriminals are exploiting, and their latest weapon is a near-perfect clone of a publisher you already trust. According to The Guardian, fraudsters are building convincing copies of legitimate news websites, then stuffing them with fabricated articles designed to funnel readers into bogus crypto and investment schemes.

The newest example centers on billionaire Jim Ratcliffe. One fake article claims he stormed out of a BBC interview after presenter Laura Kuenssberg exposed his personal finances, before hinting he’d been quietly getting rich through a secret online investment platform. Readers are nudged to click a link and grab the same opportunity.

None of it is real. The link doesn’t lead to a genuine broker. It drops victims onto a cloned trading platform that harvests personal details. Shortly after, the phone rings: scammers pressure targets into pouring money into fraudulent crypto or stock schemes that simply don’t exist. The only goal is to separate people from their cash.

Trusted logos, borrowed credibility

The Guardian says it’s far from the only target. Criminals have repeatedly cloned respected outlets to make fake stories look authentic. Financial campaigner Martin Lewis has been repeatedly impersonated through AI-generated fake BBC News articles, and another fabricated Guardian piece falsely claimed broadcaster Sir David Attenborough had profited from a trading platform.

The trick works because the pages look genuine. They copy the publication’s layout, typography, and navigation menus, and even lift the names and headshots of real journalists. Fact-checking group Full Fact found that one fake Ratcliffe image carried Google’s SynthID watermark, indicating it had been produced with Google’s own AI image tools.

Generative AI has lowered the bar

The rise of generative AI has made this dramatically easier. Where scammers once churned out clumsy phishing pages riddled with typos, they can now generate realistic headlines, professional-looking images, and polished articles in minutes. That makes detection much harder — but not impossible. Watch for these tells:

  • Sensational, unusually long headlines that reputable publishers would rarely run.
  • Prominent “invest now” links embedded in what looks like editorial copy — something legitimate outlets avoid.
  • Suspicious URLs that don’t match the real publication’s domain.

The Guardian says it is working with the UK Home Office and other media organizations to fight malicious scam advertising. Crypto exchange Kraken, whose branding has also been hijacked, warns that any site guaranteeing investment returns while using its name should be treated as fraudulent. The company says it works with hosting providers and law enforcement to take down fake domains.

The practical advice is simple: if an investment story feels unusually promotional, slow down before clicking. Verify the URL, avoid links shared through social media, and remember that real journalism informs you — it doesn’t pressure you into opening a trading account. In today’s internet, a familiar logo is no longer proof of anything.
