Google Pixel 11. The first phone to break the 2nm barrier

The race to 2nm silicon has a surprise frontrunner, and it isn’t Qualcomm, MediaTek or Apple. According to a report out of China, Google’s upcoming Tensor G6 will be the first smartphone chipset built on TSMC’s 2nm process — landing inside the Pixel 11 family before rivals even take the stage.

The timing lines up neatly. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, the Dimensity 9600 and Apple’s A20 Pro are all expected in devices announced in September. Google, meanwhile, has confirmed it will unveil the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold on August 12, 2026, in New York City. First-mover status is Google’s to lose.

What does that 2nm node actually buy you? On paper, the Tensor G6 is Google’s most aggressive CPU layout yet. The cluster is built around an ARM C1 Ultra Prime core clocked at a punchy 4.11 GHz, backed by four C1-Pro performance cores at 3.38 GHz and two C1-Pro efficiency cores at 2.65 GHz. Google has historically leaned on efficiency and on-device AI rather than raw benchmark bragging, so a smaller, denser process should translate into better thermals and battery life as much as headline speed.

Connectivity is getting a serious overhaul too. Out goes the perennially criticised modem situation; in comes a MediaTek M90 modem promising 5G speeds up to 12GBps, satellite connectivity and dual active 5G SIMs. For a Pixel line that has long trailed rivals on cellular performance, this could be the generation that finally closes the gap.

An FCC filing for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold has already surfaced, confirming much of what leaks had been suggesting — a reminder that Google’s hardware roadmap tends to reach regulators well before it reaches a keynote stage.

There’s a small housekeeping change worth flagging for buyers: the base Pixel 11 reportedly starts at 256GB of storage, dropping the 128GB tier entirely.

On pricing, European figures point to the Pixel 11 at €999, the Pixel 11 Pro at €1,199 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold at €1,999. US pricing hasn’t been finalised.

Pre-orders are expected to open on announcement day, with retail availability beginning August 20, 2026. If the 2nm claim holds, Google will have quietly pulled off one of the more meaningful firsts in recent smartphone silicon — and done it a full month before the competition shows up.
