UK Social Media Curfew. Britain Moves to Tame Teens' Late-Night Scrolling

Britain is about to put a bedtime on your phone — or at least on the phones of its 16- and 17-year-olds. On July 14, 2026, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall outlined a set of new rules designed to loosen social media’s grip on older teenagers, and the headline measure is a voluntary overnight curfew.

Here’s how it works. By default, platforms will block access for 16- and 17-year-olds between midnight and 6 am. Crucially, this curfew can be turned off — it’s an opt-out rather than a hard lock — but the point is that the wall goes up automatically, and teens (or parents) have to actively decide to lower it.

The curfew is only part of the package. The government is also taking aim at the design tricks that keep us glued to our screens, targeting the features it calls “addictive.” That means:

  • Infinite scrolling will be switched off for this age group — no more bottomless feeds that quietly eat your evening.
  • Mandatory breaks will be built into AI chatbot use, forcing pauses rather than endless back-and-forth conversations.
  • Live streaming will be disabled by default for 16- and 17-year-olds.
  • Stranger communication, including inside games, will also be switched off by default for these ages.

The distinction between age brackets matters here. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds will still be able to use social media — the new rules simply strip out the riskiest and most habit-forming features unless they’re deliberately re-enabled. Younger users face something far more absolute: from Spring 2027, under-16s will no longer be able to use certain social media platforms at all. That measure hasn’t yet been implemented.

Taken together, the plan draws a clear line. Instead of banning older teens outright, the UK is betting on friction — quiet defaults that nudge behaviour without slamming the door. Turn off infinite scroll, mute the midnight feed, cut off strangers in the chat, and the assumption is that healthier habits follow. Whether teenagers simply toggle the whole thing off the moment they can is, of course, the open question that will define how much of this actually sticks.

For platforms like TikTok and YouTube, it signals another round of engineering work to bake age-aware defaults into their products for the UK market. And for the wider debate about screen time, dark patterns and youth safety online, Britain is once again positioning itself as one of the more assertive regulators — willing to legislate against the very mechanics that make apps profitable in the first place.
