Whore of the Orient. LA Noire's lost successor resurfaces in fresh testimony
SHARE

Some games never ship, yet refuse to fade away. Whore of the Orient — the ambitious spiritual successor to LA Noire — is one of them. Fresh details about the abandoned project have surfaced, courtesy of a former writer who worked on it before Team Bondi shuttered its doors.

For those who missed the saga: LA Noire arrived as a genuinely novel crime drama, built on facial-capture tech that let players read a suspect’s twitching lip or darting eyes to decide whether they were lying. It was a detective sim that treated interrogation as gameplay. The follow-up was meant to carry that DNA into an entirely different setting.

Rather than 1940s Los Angeles, Whore of the Orient would have swapped sun-bleached noir for the sweat and intrigue of 1930s Shanghai — a city of foreign concessions, opium money and political knife-edges. It’s a period ripe for a hard-boiled investigator to poke around in, and on paper it sounded like the ideal canvas for Team Bondi’s brand of interactive interrogation.

The newly shared recollections come from a writer once attached to the project, offering a rare window into what the game might have become before it collapsed. Testimony like this is often all that remains of a canceled title — no trailers, no build, no store page, just the memories of the people who poured years into something the public never got to play.

And collapse it did. The project has long been all but confirmed as dead, and Team Bondi, the studio steering it, has since closed. There is no revival, no release window, no platform lineup — this is archaeology, not a preview.

What makes these details worth reading isn’t nostalgia alone. Whenever a lost game like this gets discussed, it doubles as a quiet lesson in how fragile big-budget development can be. Studios chase bold ideas, technology outpaces budgets, and even a promising follow-up to a critically praised original can vanish without a single frame reaching players.

  • Original inspiration: LA Noire, with its landmark facial-capture interrogation system
  • Proposed setting: a shift from 1940s Los Angeles to a very different locale
  • Developer: Team Bondi, now closed
  • Status: canceled, with no plans for revival

For fans still mourning the lack of a proper LA Noire sequel, the resurfaced account is bittersweet. It confirms there really was a genuine attempt to build on that foundation — and reminds us just how close, and yet how far, it ultimately came.
