AOP Student Awards 2026. Fresh photographic talent takes the spotlight

The Association of Photographers has crowned the winners of its 41st annual Student Awards, and the results are a reminder that some of the most compelling image-making happens well before a photographer turns professional. The competition draws work from students across 21 different photography courses in the UK, spanning everything from Higher National Diploma programs to Master’s degrees.

This year, entrants competed across three categories — People, Places, and Things — with Gold and Silver winners in each, plus one overall Best in Show.

That top honor went to Rupert Allen, a BA student in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, for his series Church of Coal. Shot on large-format cameras, the project documents active and retired coal miners at the last working drift colliery in Western Europe, located in South Wales. Produced in collaboration with the National Union of Miners in Pontypridd and National Museum Wales, it’s a quietly monumental piece of visual storytelling.

“All three judges were really taken with the narrative maturity and sensitivity of this series,” said judge Eleanor Harrison. “It was a glorious use of black and white imagery for true visual storytelling.”

Allen framed the work as a race against time. “As with their age now, there is not much time left before these people fade into obscurity and out of the public mind, much like the ruins of the halls and mines they once worked,” he explained.

For his win, Allen received a Fujifilm prize kit worth £2,500, along with an annual subscription to Capture One Studio.

Allen also took top spot in the People category, with Anthony Porter of Edinburgh College earning Silver for his series Seeing the Unseen.

The other categories spread the recognition around:

  • Places — Gold went to Lorena Bujalance Jimenez, an HND Photography student at the City of Glasgow College, for Swan Lake. Gemma McNaughton of Edinburgh College took Silver for Against the Grain.
  • Things — Ed Butty, a Media and Communications student at the University of Leeds, won Gold for Looking Down. Megan Dickson from Norwich University of the Arts finished runner-up with Falcon on Fist.

Fujifilm, backing the awards in 2026, was keen to align itself with emerging talent. “We believe in nurturing creativity and innovation in the field of photography and imaging,” said Lauren Drage, Marketing Manager at Fujifilm Electronic Imaging.

AOP CEO Isabelle Doran described the judging as a “herculean task,” praising the finalists’ “undiluted visual perspectives” and their willingness to both challenge and celebrate their subjects. With work ranging from documentary to still and moving images, the 41st edition underscores why these awards remain an industry benchmark for spotting who’s next.
