Sony’s most ambitious backlight yet is on the shelves, and for the first time it’s carrying a real-world discount rather than a full-fat flagship sting. The Bravia 9 II is the company’s first True RGB Mini LED television, and early buyers can shave a chunk off the price — though, as ever with cutting-edge panels, patience may be part of the deal.
What makes this set worth the fuss is the backlight itself. Instead of the usual white or blue LEDs filtered into colour, the Bravia 9 II uses independently controlled red, green and blue Mini LEDs, driven by Sony’s new RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro system. In practice that means colour is generated at the light source rather than squeezed out of it, promising purer, more saturated tones and tighter control over what lights up where.
The numbers back up the ambition. The 65-inch model packs 1530 local dimming zones, and across the range peak brightness approaches a blistering 4000 nits. That’s the kind of headroom that makes HDR highlights genuinely pop — think specular glints and sunlit skies that don’t wash out the rest of the frame.
Sony is offering the Bravia 9 II in a spread of sizes, from a sensible 65 inches all the way up to a wall-swallowing 115 inches. Here’s how the UK pricing shakes out:
- 65-inch — £3,499
- 75-inch — £4,299
- 85-inch — £5,499
- 115-inch — £22,999
For US buyers, the ladder runs from $3,599.99 for the 65-inch, up through $4,599.99 (75-inch) and $6,499.99 (85-inch), to a jaw-dropping $30,999.99 for the 115-inch behemoth.
The set was unveiled back on May 27, 2026, and it’s now available to buy. The headline saving — up to £525 off — is the sweetener for anyone ready to jump on a brand-new panel technology early. The catch is the familiar one for freshly launched flagships: availability can be tight, and depending on the size you’re after, you may find yourself waiting for stock to catch up with demand.
Still, if you’ve been holding out for the next real step in Mini LED — a backlight that colours the picture rather than just illuminating it — the Bravia 9 II is the first mainstream television to make good on the promise. And getting it at a discount, rather than a premium, is a rare thing for a set this new.
