Game of Thrones War for Westeros. The realm's redemption arc slips to 2027

Westeros has a body count that would make the Red Wedding blush — and its video game legacy isn’t much prettier. So there’s cautious optimism, tempered by hard-won wariness, around Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, the real-time strategy title from PlaySide Studios that’s now been pushed into early 2027.

The game was unveiled back on June 6, 2025 at Summer Game Fest, and it’s aiming squarely at the strategy crowd rather than the action-RPG or third-person adventure formats that previous adaptations chased with mixed results. That genre choice matters: RTS is a natural fit for a saga built on scheming houses, shifting alliances and armies grinding across a continent.

Here’s what we know is in the box so far:

  • Four playable factions: House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen and the Night King’s Army — a nice spread that covers the show’s central power struggle and its supernatural threat.
  • Hero characters: familiar faces including Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen lead your forces, giving the strategy layer some narrative teeth.
  • Two modes: a campaign mode for players who want the story beats, and a skirmish mode for those who’d rather just march armies at each other.

The inclusion of the Night King’s Army as a fully playable side is the detail worth watching. An asymmetric faction — the undead versus the living — is exactly the kind of design hook that separates a memorable RTS from a reskinned troop-shuffler. Whether PlaySide can make commanding the dead feel meaningfully different from leading, say, House Stark’s northern legions will go a long way toward deciding this game’s fate.

The franchise’s track record on PC and console is the elephant in the throne room. Previous attempts to translate Westeros into playable form have ranged from forgettable to actively disappointing, and fans have every reason to keep expectations in check until they’ve had hands on the finished product. A delay, in that context, cuts both ways: it’s another wait for a franchise that’s been burned before, but extra development time is rarely a bad omen for an ambitious strategy game.

For now, the essentials remain unconfirmed. War for Westeros is planned for PC, with early 2027 as the launch window. Pricing hasn’t been announced, and the game isn’t available to buy yet. What’s clear is that PlaySide is swinging for a genre that suits the source material better than most — now it just has to land the blow. In this game, after all, you win or you die.
