Count Binface vs Sega. A joke candidate demands Shenmue 4 by royal decree

Political manifestos usually promise lower taxes and better roads. Count Binface has a different priority: he wants Sega to finally make the next Shenmue game. In a video shared on July 22, 2026, the British satirical politician — best known for standing against prime ministers with a bin for a head — turned his campaign machinery toward one of gaming’s most beloved unfinished sagas.

For the uninitiated, Shenmue is the stuff of cult legend. Originally launched on the Dreamcast, Yu Suzuki’s sprawling revenge epic pioneered ideas that mainstream games would spend the next two decades catching up to: fully explorable towns, day-night cycles, weather systems, and NPCs going about their scheduled lives. It also cost a fortune to make and left fans dangling on cliffhangers for years.

Shenmue III eventually arrived in 2019, crowdfunded into existence by a devoted community that refused to let the story die. But it ended, once again, without resolution — leaving protagonist Ryo Hazuki’s quest tantalisingly incomplete. That unfinished business is exactly the gap Count Binface has spotted.

Framing his appeal as an attempt to win over the “Shenmue constituency,” the Count is essentially voicing what a large and vocal fanbase has been chanting for years. It’s a joke, of course — Binface’s entire schtick is deadpan absurdity wrapped around genuine cultural touchpoints. But the underlying sentiment is real. Few franchises inspire this level of patient, decades-long devotion, and few have left their audience so deliberately hanging.

What makes the stunt land is its target. Shenmue occupies a strange place in gaming history: enormously influential, commercially fraught, and perpetually one sequel away from closure. Rallying behind it is a low-risk, high-affection cause — the kind of thing a bin-headed candidate can champion knowing the crowd will cheer.

There is, naturally, no official word from Sega. No Shenmue 4 has been announced, no platform confirmed, no release window floated. Yu Suzuki has previously spoken about his hopes for continuing the story, but hope and a greenlit budget are very different things — as the tortured production history of the series makes abundantly clear.

Whether Count Binface’s endorsement moves the needle at Sega HQ is doubtful. Publishers rarely take their marching orders from novelty politicians. Still, in an era where fan campaigns have genuinely resurrected dead franchises and crowdfunding brought Shenmue III back from oblivion, stranger things have happened. If nothing else, the Count has reminded everyone that Ryo’s story is still out there, still unfinished, still waiting.

Consider it the most peculiar piece of fan advocacy the series has seen — and a reminder that some cliffhangers refuse to be forgotten, no matter how many years pass.
